ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Thomas Warfield, a well-known figure in the Rochester arts community, has a story deeply rooted in the city’s cultural landscape. Warfield, the nephew of renowned Eastman School of Music graduate William Warfield, has made significant contributions to both the local and global arts scenes.
He performs as a singer, composer, pianist, and dancer.
“I got home and said to my mom, I want to dance. And she goes, okay. And she opens the phone book and looks up dance schools and she finds Mercury Ballet,” Warfield said.
Dance became Warfield’s passion, leading him to New York, where he danced with the esteemed Joffrey Ballet. However, his dance career ended due to a hip injury.
“I got an injury, a hip injury and the doctor said oh you can’t dance. You’ll never dance again because this will heal but you’ll never be able to use your leg like a dancer,” Warfield said.
Warfield then joined the chorus at New York City Opera, showcasing his versatility as a performer. His career took him around the world, but he returned to Rochester to care for his aging parents and embraced a new role.
He began teaching dance at Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf, learning sign language to connect with his students.
“Did you ever think I don’t know how I’m going to teach dance to deaf students? No. That’s my mother in me. I never think I can’t do something,” Warfield said.
Warfield also became president of the William Warfield Foundation, which provides scholarships to Black students studying opera. This initiative continues to connect students to the Warfield legacy.
“To be able to see all these students who have benefited from being a part of the Warfield family. It’s remarkable. And I feel my job has been to keep the scholarship going,” Warfield said.
Thomas Warfield will perform alongside the newest scholarship recipient and opera great Kiersten Piper Brown at a concert on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 4 p.m. Tickets are on sale now on the Eastman Theatre’s website here.
