Jazz to Add, Cut Lonzo Ball (Report)

Former Chicago Bulls point guard Lonzo Ball has fallen mightily since he inked a four-year, $80 million deal to anchor the 2021-22 Bulls’ perimeter defense. He signed a two-season, $20 million extension after making a triumphant return from a two-and-a-half-year, triple-surgery absence at the end of 2024-25. Chicago promptly traded him to the contending Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for 3-and-D shooting guard/small forward Isaac Okoro.

Ball’s unhappy tenure in Cleveland is now over. Per Shams Charania of ESPN, the Cavaliers are offloading the 6-foot-6 UCLA product’s $10 million contract plus two second-round draft picks to the Utah Jazz in a salary dump. Utah is anticipated to cut Ball. Provided he clears waivers, he’ll be free to sign anywhere as a free agent.

The Atlanta Hawks are also acquiring reserve center Jock Landale from Utah for cash considerations, Charania reports. Smith notes that Ball will likely be traded into the remainder of Utah’s traded player exception that it obtained when it ditched forward John Collins.

As Keith Smith of Spotrac observes, this latest move will get Cleveland just $3.8 million away from dipping under the NBA’s very punitive second luxury tax apron.

The Bulls Have Now Officially Won the Lonzo Ball-Isaac Okoro Swap

This deal stands as final proof that Chicago has emerged victorious in its deal to ditch Ball for Okoro this summer.

Ball, far past his prime following three successive surgeries on the same knee, used to be an above-average 3-and-D point guard. By the time he landed with the Cavs, who were fresh off a 64-win season, he was expected to provide those services (plus unreal passing) in a limited reserve role. His body limited him from even achieving that.

Across 35 healthy games for Cleveland this season, Ball averaged a career-worst 4.6 points on an abysmal .301/.272/.667 slash line, plus 4.0 rebounds, 3.9 dimes (against 1.5 turnovers), and 1.3 steals in just 20.8 minutes per.

Okoro, meanwhile, has become a beloved, efficient 3-and-D role player for the Bulls. The club’s extremely limited perimeter defense has necessitated that he serve as its undersized starting small forward, a bigger role than he enjoyed on a better Cleveland club last year.

Across 43 contests, the 6-foot-4 wing has been averaging 8.7 points on .471/.341/.761 shooting splits, 2.7 boards, and 1.5 dimes. He’s Chicago’s best perimeter defender and has had to cover everyone from Kevin Durant to Anthony Edwards.
