OPE! TreVeyon Henderson Thought He Was Going to be a Bear

Long before he was set to take on the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX as a member of the New England Patriots, there was a time when I thought TreVeyon Henderson was going to join the Chicago Bears backfield.

And the NFL Draft night story he told to the folks at CHGO is a doozy:

    Words from TreVeyon Henderson:

“When I was getting the call, my TV was a little delayed, and the Chicago Bears, I thought that they were up. And when I got the phone call I thought that it was the Chicago Bears. And they told me it was the New England Patriots, I was smiling but my heart sunk at the same time. Because during the draft process everyone was telling me Patriots is the last team, the last one that you want to go to. I’m believing whatever they said. I’m trying to dodge the Patriots at all costs. But then I got picked by them, and it was such a crazy moment.”

Getting a peek behind the scenes at what a prospect experiences on NFL Draft night never gets old. And I’m not saying that for effect. Everyone who makes it to that point in their football playing career has a unique story, with the events of draft weekend representing another pivotal juncture in their playing career. Hearing a story like the one from TreVeyon Henderson, which has a range of emotions, is a treat.

All is well that ends well for TreVeyon Henderson, the Patriots, and the Bears

I’ve watched the clip above a handful of times and still can’t get past how TreVeyon Henderson really thought he was going to join the Chicago Bears. I can’t blame him. The Bears had a need at the position and there had been plenty of buzz about the team’s interest in the Ohio State prospect. Henderson was coming off a stellar college career and looked like the type of running back prospect who would make a nice fit for Chicago’s new-look offense under the direction of Ben Johnson in his first year as a head coach. So when Henderson was still available in Round 2, it was easy to imagine the Bears calling his name and making him the pick.

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS SUPER BOWL SPOTLIGHT

And because I didn’t have the New England Patriots as being needy for a running back, I wasn’t expecting that team to make that pick with the 38th overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft. After seeing Henderson put up 1,132 scrimmage yards and 10 touchdowns en route to winning the AFC championship, I’m sure the Pats have no regrets. As for the Bears, they still came out like bandits on NFL Draft weekend. Because, with pick No. 39, they landed Missouri wide receiver Luther Burden III — a key cog in what was Pro Football Focus’ highest-graded draft class.

When it comes to Chicago’s running back situation, there are still some questions that need to be answered. For starters, how much longer will the team stick with D’Andre Swift? The Bears’ leading rusher is coming off a career year, (career-high 1,087 rushing yards, 9 touchdowns) but has just one year remaining on his contract. An extension is something that could make sense for both sides.

Is Kyle Monangai ready for an expanded role? Monangai made the most of his 187 touches by racking up 783 rushing yards and five touchdowns. But there were moments where he was a liability as a receiver and pass protection. Will he be better in Year 2?

In the end, I think the Bears will be fine at the running back position. Their head coach clearly values the position and knows how to get the most out of the players at his disposal. Would it have been nice to have someone like TreVeyon Henderson to lean on? Sure. But I think Chicago’s football team will be just fine without him.
