John Ricci, former 1980s Exciter guitarist, has announced his debut album with his new band PowerRage. The announcement was shared via Instagram Monday morning. The new album, titled Beast, is slated for released on April 24.
PowerRage was formed in late 2024 and consists of two past Exciter members, guitarist Ricci and vocalist Jacques Bélanger, along with former Witchkiller bassist Todd Pilon and drummer Lucas Dery. While two former Exciter members are featured in the new band's lineup, Ricci, the primary visionary, is adamant about PowerRage exploring new sounds.
"Well, with this band I didn’t want to be another Exciter. It was time to move on. Even though Exciter was based around my guitar style, and it was a successful formula, I wanted to start from scratch and start all over again," said Ricci on the new album. "Starting over and not depending on your past accomplishments is definitely a very difficult task but I feel confident enough I can make it happen. I wrote everything on Beast: music, lyrics, melodies. Powerrage is one hundred percent my musical vision. All eight songs are brand-new, no rehashed riffs from my Exciter days.”
Ricci founded the popular 1980s metal band in 1978 along with vocalist and dummer Dan Beehler and bassist Allan Johnson. The band released 11 studio albums throughout their career and are widely recognized for pioneering the speed metal genre. In 2018, Ricci officially announced his departure from the group, leaving no original members in the line up.
