Over 20 years since the end of Everybody Loves Raymond, series star Ray Romano is looking to get back into the television format with his new collaboration with HBO.
According to Deadline, the 68-year-old comedian is officially set to star in a new pilot for HBO Max. Rather than a traditional comedy series, however, the new project will instead feature a more dramatic tone, focusing on a family grieving the sudden loss of their mother.
The series, titled How to Survive Without Me, will be written by Greg Berlanti and Bash Doran, with Romano cast in the lead role of Leo De Angelis, a recent widower struggling to accept his role as his family's new emotional anchor.
"As his five complicated adult children begin to navigate life without their mother at the center, Leo is forced to find his own voice as a parent, moving out of wife’s shadow to become the family’s new, differently effective center," Deadline summarized the premise.
As per the publication, the lead role in the series was reportedly written for Romano after his earlier success in Berlanti’s 2024 movie Fly Me To the Moon.
If successful, the series would mark Romano's first starring role in a TV series since Everybody Loves Romano's conclusion in 2005. In the decades since, the Emmy-winning comedian has appeared in recurring roles in a variety of TV shows, although he has yet to perform as a series' central lead since.
“We are so excited to work with Ray on How to Survive Without Me,” said Sarah Aubrey, Head of Max Original Programming. “The show harkens back to the kinds of aspirational family dramas that Greg does so well, a grounded narrative centered around navigating love, loss, and a one-of-a-kind family. It’s a project designed to return year after year, continually deepening the audience’s connection to these beloved characters and their unique story.”
“Ray is a beloved icon who has an incredible gift for bringing both depth and levity to every character he portrays,” said Clancy Collins White, President, Creative Affairs, Warner Bros. Television. “We’re thrilled to welcome him to How to Survive Without Me as Leo, the patriarch woven into this deeply moving family story. We know his performance will bring nuance and heart to Greg and Bash’s vision, and form a powerful emotional connection with viewers.”
