Send Cascadia back to the developer

Referencing the letter from Johnny Olson, city councilmember, that the city of Greeley taxpayers dare to challenge the infinite wisdom of the board of directors and city boarding, zoning ordinances of Ballot Question 1A is an example of the populace questioning tyrannical judgment of an out-of-step city board.

The Cascadia project, at a cost of $800,000 to $1.1 billion, is and will be future burden to the city taxpayers. The site does not have existing water, sewer or other infrastructure requirements. The overcrowded U.S. 34 corridor does run by the site and if the project is built will continue create intolerable traffic problems. How do the taxpayers of COG even know the local ice hockey team will be in business in three to five years. Currently the city of Windsor is suffering from the demise of a similar sports program.

Has anyone from the COG planning staff or city commission considered constructing this proposed project in Promontory where water, sewer and infrastructure currently exist. Send this project back to the developer and they can fully fund the project if it is such a great asset.

    Vote no on Issue 1A

My name is Toni Castiglioni, I am the owner of Aggregate Logistics, a material supply company that has proudly served Northern Colorado for 18 years. As a woman-owned business deeply rooted in this community, I am writing to urge Greeley voters to vote No on Ballot Issue 1A in the upcoming special election.

Small businesses like mine are the backbone of our local economy. We hire our neighbors, support families who buy homes here, and keep dollars circulating at restaurants, shops, and services throughout the region. Projects that respect and include small businesses — especially women-owned and minority-owned enterprises — help us all thrive.

From many. years of personal experience working with the Water Valley Company, I can attest to their outstanding treatment of businesses like mine. Their ownership and management have consistently shown enormous respect for minority- and women-owned businesses, creating real opportunities for us to succeed. I am thrilled that Water Valley was selected as the developer for the Cascadia project. This is the coolest, biggest development I’ve ever seen and if Greeley gets it right the community will flourish. Hopefully this is not just some hyped up plan that never gets built. That would be a waste of time for all of us involved in the project plans.

Voting No on 1A will keep this beautiful project moving forward, opening doors for my peers in the women-owned and minority-owned business community and creating more opportunities across Northern Colorado.

Please join me in voting No on 1A. Let’s build a stronger, more inclusive future for Greeley together.

    Pianist deserved a real introduction

I am a Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra supporter and love their talented members, but on Saturday night I was very disappointed. My wife and I are parents of very talented grandchildren who although autistic are extremely talented. Our oldest grandchild has won a $10,000 scholarship to the University of Missouri because of his inventiveness. His sisters are good musicians and language learners and will go on to college. When the Greeley Phil played “A new world a-Comin'” they brought out an amazing autistic pianist who astounded the audience that gave him and immediate cheer. Lowell Graham brought the pianist out and forced a quick bow but did not introduce him. What a shame!

ICE can’t be reformed; it should be dismantled

I recently read Senator Michael Bennet’s press release with suggestions about ICE. While I applaud a few of them, the idea of retraining ICE agents is fanciful, to put it mildly.

This iteration of ICE cannot be reformed and there will not be accountability. Trump will wink, nod and agree and then not follow through. It’s not in his DNA. The notion of reining in ICE agents sounds like a talking point from meek Beltway consultants who can’t see the forest for the trees.

I want our elected Democrats in Washington, D.C., to stop taking their “advice” and believe their own eyes. See the thousands of us in the streets bearing witness to the violent stops, abductions, shootings and deaths of Americans at the hands of this agency. This is untenable. Dismantle it and start anew.

Use the power you have, while you have it. Don’t squander it by offering up half measures. Lives depend on it.
