Parents Accused of Killing Baby Girl Are Charged With Murder in Louisiana

The parents of a 2-month-old baby girl, who authorities said was severely neglected and abused before she died in October, have been indicted in her death.

A grand jury indicted Kaylee Faye Fontenot, 20, and Taylor Daniel Broussard, 19, on first-degree murder charges in connection with the abuse of their daughter, the St. Landry Parish District Attorney’s Office announced in a Monday, February 2, news release.

Fontenot and Broussard’s baby girl had been born healthy “without complications,” the district attorney’s office said.

However, about eight weeks later, on the evening of October 2025, first responders were called to a medical emergency at an Opelousas home, where they found the infant not breathing, according to the Opelousas Police Department.

Despite attempts to save her life, the baby was declared dead at a nearby hospital, the department said in an October 31 news release.

An autopsy revealed she was extremely dehydrated, malnourished, and had broken bones, some of which were in the process of healing, according to police.

The baby also had a “severed lower spine, resulting in internal bleeding and ultimately, death,” the police department said.

Since the girl’s birth, Fontenot and Broussard had “exclusive custody” over their daughter, investigators learned, according to police.

They were ultimately suspected in her death.

“Our hearts are with this infant who suffered unimaginable abuse,” Opelousas Police Chief Graig LeBlanc said in a statement in October.

Information on Fontenot and Broussard’s legal representation was not immediately available on Tuesday, February 3.

If both parents are found guilty of first-degree murder, Fontenot and Broussard would face a mandatory life prison sentence involving hard labor, according to the district attorney’s office.

In Louisiana, a sentence involving hard labor would historically entail hard physical work, according to the Ikerd Law Firm, which is based in Lafayette. This would include inmates performing road work, working in quarries as well as on plantations.

When a defendant is sentenced to hard labor in Louisiana today, the sentence may involve performing hard work, the law firm reports online. However, it mostly dictates where the defendant will be detained, if they are eligible for parole, if they are eligible for certain programs, and whether they can pursue an appeal.

Fontenot and Broussard, if convicted, would serve their life sentences at a state prison run by the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections, not a local parish, according to the law firm.

They are due back in court for an arraignment set for February 19, the district attorney’s office said.

Fontenot and Broussard’s indictments come after another Louisiana parent was sentenced to prison on January 21 in connection with her infant’s death, Us Weekly reported.

Ahead of her sentence, Cormier pleaded no contest to a negligent homicide charge, according to the Jeff Davis Parish District Attorney’s Office.
