What’s the plan for Mike LaFleur’s Cardinals coaching staff, Kyler Murray?

TEMPE — Mike LaFleur’s first — and likely easiest — task as Cardinals head coach was out of the way following Tuesday’s introductory press conference.

Now, it’s time to get down to business. Given where this team currently stands and where LaFleur wants to be, there’s plenty of work to be done before the team reconvenes for offseason programs.

And it starts with rounding out a coaching staff.

Being the last announced hiring in the coaching cycle, LaFleur is behind in that department. The prospects of bringing over defensive coordinator Gus Bradley have already been dashed. Wink Martindale has been linked to Arizona’s DC opening, but it goes beyond that.

LaFleur will call plays for the first time since his days with the New York Jets (2021-22) after doing so sparingly during his most recent three-year run with Sean McVay’s Los Angeles Rams. That doesn’t mean the offensive coordinator job should be viewed any less. After all, LaFleur was in a similar role before becoming a head coach.

Can’t forget about special teams coordinator, either.

“We are casting a wide net,” LaFleur said Tuesday. “There are conversations that need to be had within this building first with the coaches and all that. We’re going to be open to that and again, we owe it to these players to build the best staff that we can for these guys.”

As far as former coordinators go, the only one without a new home is DC Nick Rallis after both special teams coordinator Jeff Rodgers (Buffalo) and offensive coordinator Drew Petzing (Detroit) landed elsewhere.

Could Rallis be a part of those in-house conversations toward a return? What about a guy like quarterbacks coach Israel Woolfork getting a promotion? Just thinking out loud here!

However it shakes out, an influx of experience is a must.

That wasn’t the case with the last coaching staff, which turned to first-time coordinators under Jonathan Gannon (on top of more new blood among position coaches), and that ultimately played a big role in its downfall.

Building the coaching staff is one thing. Getting the roster sorted out is another.

And although there’s no shortage of questions in that department, the biggest one centers around quarterback Kyler Murray and his future. And why wouldn’t it?

“When you talk about Kyler, just in general, I don’t need to turn on the tape,” LaFleur told Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo. “I’ve been in this division for seven years and five of them with him. … He’s a problem. He’s been a good player in this league and look forward to getting up there with Monti (Ossenfort) and having conversations about all these guys.”

“We’ve had some closed-door conversations about how we’re going to make sure this roster is the best it can be moving forward and those will continue,” LaFleur added when asked if there was an avenue where he could see Murray being Arizona’s quarterback this season.

Murray not only represents Arizona’s biggest roster question to answer, he’s also among the most time sensitive.

If the quarterback is on the roster by the fifth day of the new league year on March 16, his base salary for 2027 becomes fully guaranteed. That’s $19.5 million, according to OverTheCap.

If Arizona is truly moving on from the signal caller — which is the heavy favorite in the clubhouse — being on the hook for that kind of pay day is something they’d want to avoid at all costs.

Murray’s future and what Arizona has planned at quarterback was likely a major talking point in the interview process for LaFleur and the other candidates the Cardinals met with across a search that spanned 27 days.

A decision — or at least the framework of one — could very well already be made. But until it sees the light of day, everything is (technically) on the table.
