NBC Chicago reporters are consistently asked about a lot about people interviewed for stories, and we have an update on a grandmother who was mauled by two dogs in Harvey last spring.
The 58-year-old was attacked on the evening of April 14. Donna Hale said she was walking near 145th and Sangamon in Harvey, when something touched her. It turned out to be two large Rottweilers.
“I yelled to maybe try and scare them, but that didn’t work, and I walked backward, and they just kept coming, then I fell down,” said Donna. “Once I fell, down, one grabbed my arm, one grab my foot and never let it go. They dragged me up and down the street. It seemed like forever. All I could do was yell. Nobody was coming out. Nobody heard me. Suddenly, I saw a bright light. I didn’t know if it was coming from up above or what. I turned my head, and then there was a car coming.”
That car belonged to a man who immediately sprang into action.
“This guy saw me getting mauled. I heard him say, ‘I think I’m going to have to shoot these expletives,'” she said. “He got out and said, ‘miss, whatever you do, do not move.’ And I didn’t move. And all I heard was a shot. I heard one of the dogs yelp. The other one ran. Then a lady pulled up in the van, and she was like, ‘baby, you’re going to be all right.’ I was like please help me, please help. She’s like, ‘I’m calling the ambulance right now.’”
Donna said she would not be alive today were it not for the man who shot the dog and the woman who called 911 and waited with her. Donna underwent seven surgeries and spent a month in the hospital, ultimately having part of her foot amputated.
Still, Donna says she has never given up hope.
“I mean, I never got depressed or down because I was just glad to be alive,” she said. “And I have a great sister. She is my hero. She is awesome. She’s been there for me from the moment it happened. She was the first face that I saw when I opened my eyes. And nothing’s changed. Nothing’s changed, she loves me, and I love her. And she’s been amazing.”
According to the Cook County Department of Animal and Rabies Control, officers responded shortly after the attack. They located the dog that had been shot during the incident, and it was taken to a facility to be euthanized and tested for rabies.
The second dog was never located.
