ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A cold front Tuesday evening delivers less than an inch of snow for most, but drops visibility and creates some slick spots on roads. This will be followed by chillier air for Wednesday and Thursday, with highs back in the lower half of the 20s. We’ll see some localized lake effect snow back behind the front, mainly in northeast Wayne County. Some communities there may see a 1-3″ accumulation into Wednesday, then the snow lifts back north with a wind shift.
Our weather becomes more active again on Friday with the arrival of our next clipper. This will move through the Great Lakes quickly, bringing an inch or two of area-wide snow Friday afternoon and evening, followed by plunging temperatures and lake effect snow. Starting with the temperatures: we’ll flirt with 30 on Friday, then drop to near zero by Saturday morning. A gusty wind will drop wind chill values to -10° to -25° during the day Saturday. This is dangerous cold if you have to be out in it for an extended period of time. If you do need to be outside, make sure you’re dressed appropriately: heavy jackets, hats, gloves, scarves – cover exposed skin if possible. Sunday will remain very cold, but less wind, so wind chill values may not be quite as brutal. We’ll likely put up a Yellow Alert for Saturday within the next 24 hours as a “heads up” to keep an eye on the forecast if you have outdoor plans.
In addition to the cold, we’ll see some lake effect snow off of Lake Ontario. Lake Erie is mostly frozen over, which limits lake effect. But there is still plenty of open water on Lake Ontario. A northwesterly wind will likely produce several inches of new lake fluff starting Friday night and lasting into Sunday. It is too early for specifics, but keep that snow shovel handy, and many could also be doing some plowing or snow blowing, as well. We’ll update with amounts by Wednesday or Thursday as we get closer.
