US shoots down Iranian drone near Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier in Arabian Sea

The US military has shot down an Iranian drone as it approached the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea.

The Shahed-139 model drone was downed by an F-35C fighter jet from the carrier as it approached the vessel on Tuesday, the spokesman of US Central Command (CENTCOM) said.

US forces shot down the drone as it “aggressively approached a US Navy aircraft carrier with unclear intent”, Captain Tim Hawkins said on X.

The Abraham Lincoln was transiting the Arabian Sea about 500 miles from Iran’s southern coast, he said, when “an Iranian Shahed-139 drone unnecessarily manoeuvred toward the ship. The Iranian drone continued to fly toward the ship despite de-escalatory measures taken by US forces operating in international waters.

“An F-35C fighter jet from Abraham Lincoln shot down the Iranian drone in self-defence and to protect the aircraft carrier and personnel on board. No American service members were harmed during the incident, and no US equipment was damaged.”

The USS Abraham Lincoln arrived in the Middle East last week as part of a US military build-up in the region amid heightened tensions with Iran, which President Donald Trump described as a “massive armada”.

In another flashpoint on Tuesday, Iranian gunboats reportedly approached a US oil tanker in the strait of Hormuz off Iran’s southern coast.

The boats armed with 50-calibre machine guns ordered the US ship to stop and prepare for boarding, The Wall Street Journal reported, but it sped up instead and later received an escort from a US warship.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations group, affiliated with the Royal Navy, reported that a vessel in the Strait was “hailed…by numerous armed vessels,” without identifying their origin.

“The vessel has ignored the request to stop and has continued on its planned route. Authorities are investigating,” the statement added.

Iran and the US are due to begin negotiations this week to avert a potential military clash, with Tehran’s nuclear programme central to discussions.

However, a report on Tuesday suggested that Iran was now attempting to change the venue and format for talks with the US on Friday.

Iran wanted to hold talks in Oman now, rather than Istanbul, and to hold them in a bilateral format, only with the US, rather than with several Arab and Muslim countries as observers, according to Axios.

The US struck Iranian nuclear sites with bunker buster bombs last year in “Operation Midnight Hammer” during the 12-day war with Israel. Trump claimed at the time the attack had “obliterated” the nuclear programme.
