Tuberculosis outbreak leads to another Riordan basketball postponement

Archbishop Riordan’s basketball programs remain on the sidelines as the San Francisco school navigates multiple cases of tuberculosis in its community.

Riordan athletic director Bob Greene told the Bay Area News Group on Monday afternoon that the Crusaders’ boys basketball game against Serra on Tuesday will be postponed.

It is the third varsity boys game that has been affected by the TB outbreak at the school. Riordan and Sacred Heart Cathedral did not play on Thursday after news of cases at Riordan spread. Riordan’s game against Bellarmine on Saturday also was postponed.

The Riordan girls have also been affected, as their game against San Ramon Valley on Saturday was canceled as well as the matchup with SHC on Thursday.

“The leadership in our league, the principals met this morning trying to sort through some things,” Greene told this news organization. “So as of now, the Serra games, the lower-level games are canceled, and the varsity game is postponed.”

Riordan’s girls are not scheduled to play Tuesday. Both the boys and girls teams are scheduled to face St. Francis on Thursday.

ponements are piling up as the end of the West Catholic Athletic League season nears. Both Riordan’s boys and girls conclude their seasons on Feb. 17 against St. Ignatius.

As it stands, the boys — second in the latest Bay Area News Group rankings — have four scheduled games left, plus potential makeup dates with SHC, Bellarmine and Serra.

The girls — ranked fifth — have four games left, not including a rescheduled SHC game.

WCAL commissioner Jolene Fugate declined to comment when reached other than to specify that the games that have not been played are currently classified as postponements and not cancellations.
