Why Cole Kmet Calls Declan Doyle’s Departure a “Big Loss”

The Ravens made it officially official with Declan Doyle, who becomes the new offensive coordinator in Baltimore after a one-year stint with the Chicago Bears in that same role.

Happy trails, Declan. For the sake of Lamar Jackson fantasy owners, I hope you make the most of your time with the Ravens:

There was hope that Declan Doyle would return to the Bears for a second season. After all, turning down a Philadelphia Eagles team looking to fill an offensive coordinator gig helps me understand why that was the case. But when the Ravens came calling and dangling the opportunity to call plays for a two-time NFL MVP, I can also understand why Doyle is leaving town. And while Doyle wasn’t calling plays in Chicago, it doesn’t take much to get a grasp for why the Bears will miss their departing offensive coordinator.

Cole Kmet explains what Declan Doyle brought to the table

In an interview with 104.3 The Score (that’ll take some time to get used to writing) on Monday, Bears tight end Cole Kmet discussed why Declan Doyle leaving to become the Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator is a big deal. And I do not take it lightly that Kmet called it a “big loss” when discussing Doyle leaving for Baltimore and Eric Bieniemy taking his talents back to Kansas City to coach with Andy Reid and the Chiefs:

Cole Kmet called Declan Doyle's departure to the Ravens a "big loss" for the Bears and praised how much he helped the team's offense.Notably, Doyle was influential in the Bears' halftime adjustments, Kmet said. pic.twitter.com/0DabgIVNnw

Some words from Kmet laying out the situation:

“Obviously, a big loss for us losing Declan and EB. Two great coaches and guys that provided a lot of value to the offensive side of the ball this year. I know even though Declan doesn’t call the plays for us, the amount of work he did on the offensive side of the football was immense. You could see that day to day in practices, and I’m sure it took off of Ben (Johnson) throughout the week for his duties as a head coach.

You can tell the things in terms of getting the scout team correct, getting all those cards ready, dialed up, and ready to go. Whether it’s scripting a practice, I’m sure Declan had a huge say as to what plays we were going to have up and what looks we were going to get throughout a week of practice. And then when we’d go over our film from Friday on Saturday morning, Declan is the guy going over that tape with the whole skill group and then leading us in the walk-through on Saturday before our main mini walk-through before we get to the hotel. Declan was very hands on with all of us and that is a big role.”

On the one hand, I feel confident that Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson can find an up-and-coming coaching candidate who can do the type of grunt work Cole Kmet describes above. But on the other hand, it stinks that the Bears have to find that guy right now. I was hoping Declan Doyle would stick around for a second season so Chicago’s offense could have some continuity going into Year 2. However, with that being said, I understand why Doyle left because I’d probably make that same decision, too, if given that type of an opportunity to coach someone like Lamar Jackson.

In the end, it sounds like Doyle will be missed inside Halas Hall. Good luck to the Bears in their search to find his replacement.
