Eaton boy hit by car looks at long recovery after skull fractures

Bentley Bass was on his way to get snacks before heading back to watch a wrestling match at Eaton Middle School when a driver struck him, causing two skull fractures and brain bleeds.

The 13-year-old boy was looking forward to joining the football team, and he had dreams of one day joining the Army or becoming a police officer. Now, his focus is on recovery.

On Jan. 20, Bentley was with a group of kids walking east through the painted crosswalk on U.S. 85 at Collins Street, when a driver who was westbound on Collins Street tried turning south onto U.S. 85 , striking Bentley and another juvenile. Eaton police responded to the crash about 4 p.m.

The driver, 39-year-old Chad Wiley, faces charges of careless driving, careless driving causing serious bodily injury and four counts of failure to yield right of way to a pedestrian. The department recommended the charges Thursday, according to an Eaton Police Department spokesperson.

Bentley had to be airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Aurora to be treated for his injuries, according to his GoFundMe page. The funds will go toward Bentley’s recovery care, transportation costs and lost income as his dad takes time off work to focus on his son’s recovery. The fundraiser has received nearly 90% of its goal of raising $4,000 as of Monday.

While Bentley is back home and recovering, his father said his child’s future looks completely different than what they had anticipated.

Before the crash, Derrick Bass said his son was like any other boy his age. But as he recovers, Bentley will have to take things much slower.

“No bikes, no scooters, no hoverboards,” Derrick said. “Basically anything he likes to do has to stop for at least the next year.”

Part of Bentley’s skull had to be removed and replaced with a plate, Derrick said, meaning a concussion would be severely damaging. With the risk of injury so high, doctors recommended Bentley doesn’t move his body quickly or roughly. They also recommended he never play contact sports again.

Instead, Bentley will have several appointments to examine how his injuries may have affected his thinking, speech and behavior, and how he can recover.

“There’s things that won’t be visible right now that can pop up later in life,” Derrick said.

Derrick just wants his son to be himself again. Derrick knows his son is upset about not being able to play football with his friends again.

“It’s just frustrating because we didn’t ask for this and we didn’t cause it,” Derrick said. “But we’re the one that has to clean up the mess.”

Though his son is a smart, resilient and driven kid who is capable of finding success anywhere, Derrick said Bentley’s path to recovery is going to be a long and hard one with many questions still up in the air. He hopes this hasn’t affected his son’s future drastically.

“I’m just afraid that this could restrict him from reaching his own personal goals,” Derrick said.
