Lebanon’s Hezbollah denied any connection to the repeated attacks that have hit the Mazzeh area in Damascus in recent weeks.
Syria’s Interior Ministry had said that the rockets and launch platforms used in the attacks, along with the drones that were seized, belonged to Hezbollah.
Hezbollah’s Media Relations office issued a statement on Sunday, 1 February, responding to what it described as “accusations” made by Syria’s Interior Ministry, saying the ministry had “arbitrarily dragged the party’s name into the matter,” as the statement put it.
It said Hezbollah “has no activity, connection, or relationship with any party in Syria, and has no presence on Syrian territory,” adding that it is “keen on Syria’s unity and the security of its people.” The statement noted that this position “has been declared for a long time and is not new.”
Interior Ministry says it dismantled the cell
Syria’s Interior Ministry announced that its security units, in cooperation with the General Intelligence Service, carried out a series of “precise” operations in the Damascus suburbs (Rif Dimashq governorate, surrounding the capital). The ministry said the operations targeted an “terrorist” cell allegedly involved in several attacks that struck the Mazzeh area (a western Damascus district) and its military airport.
According to a statement published by the ministry today, the operations resulted in the dismantling of the cell and the arrest of all its members.
The ministry said the operation followed sustained field monitoring and tracking of rocket launch sites in Darayya (a western suburb of Damascus) and Kafr Sousa (a neighborhood in Damascus).
Security efforts, the statement added, led to the identification of one of the alleged attackers and to his close monitoring, which then helped uncover the rest of the cell’s members.
Several raids were then carried out, during which all those described as “involved” were arrested. Several drones were also seized, which the ministry said had been prepared for use in “terrorist” acts.
Linked to “external parties.”
The ministry said preliminary investigations with those arrested showed they were linked to external parties, and that the rockets and launch platforms used in the attacks, as well as the drones seized, belonged to Lebanon’s Hezbollah.
Those arrested admitted they had been preparing to carry out new attacks using drones, but their arrest thwarted the plan before it was implemented. All seized items were confiscated, and the detainees were referred to the Counterterrorism Department to complete the necessary investigations.
What happened in the attacks?
Three rocket shells landed in the Mezzeh area of Damascus on 3 January, causing no injuries or fatalities.
The Damascus Media Directorate said one shell hit the dome of al-Mohammadi Mosque, the second struck the telecommunications building, and the third fell near Mezzeh Airport.
In the same area, an explosion occurred near the Mezzeh Military Airport on 9 December 2025, after it was targeted by three shells of unknown origin, with no injuries or material damage reported.
Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Damascus reported at the time that the explosion was caused by rocket shells of unknown origin hitting the vicinity of the Mezzeh Military Airport. The blast was heard across the capital before SANA, citing a security source, reported that Internal Security Forces had found the rocket launchers, without providing further details.
A woman was also injured in explosions that shook Damascus on 14 November 2025, as the Defense Ministry said the incident resulted from rockets targeting the Mezzeh 86 neighborhood with Katyusha type rockets.
The Defense Ministry’s Media and Communications Directorate told the official SANA agency that the explosion injured several civilians and caused material damage at the site.
According to a map shown by al-Ikhbariya in the broadcast, the rocket launch location was in the al-Luwan area within Kafr Sousa, on the outskirts of Damascus.
Mezzeh 86 is a densely populated neighborhood with widespread informal housing. It is not far from Mezzeh Villas, an area that includes security and diplomatic premises.
Multiple parties may have an interest
Several actors have an interest in shelling Damascus, according to researcher Ammar Jello of the al-Hiwar Center for Research and Studies in Washington. These include some factions integrated into the government but dissatisfied with some of its directions, whether regarding openness to all components of Syrian society, or regarding the openness and flexibility Damascus has shown on the issue of negotiations with Israel.
In previous comments to Enab Baladi, Jello said other actors outside the government also have an interest, such as Suwayda factions, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), some Islamic State cells, and remnants of the former regime. He said these parties have an interest in portraying the government as weak and unable to maintain security in sensitive areas of the Syrian capital.
For his part, researcher Mutaz al-Sayyed of the Syrian Center for Security and Defense Studies said available indicators suggest the primary beneficiaries of these operations are armed groups linked to remnants of the former regime, seeking to create security turmoil inside the capital. He added that this pattern of operations reflects less a strategic capability than a showy attempt to attract support or revive a waning presence, leaving the impact limited and confined to temporary disruption.
