ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Punxsutawney Phil has seen his shadow on this Groundhog Day so that means six more weeks of winter, as if we didn’t already know that! It’s been a rough winter so far with snowfall well above normal with over 80 inches at the Rochester Airport and areas closer to the lake much higher than that. Temps will come back a bit today and should get above 20 degrees for the first time in over a week. This stretch has been one of the coldest in recorded Rochester history. Looking ahead to this week the brutal cold takes a break with temps in the 20s through Friday. Not a lot of snow in the forecast with mainly flurries and snow showers into Thursday. For you guys near Lake Ontario we need to watch a snow band that develops tomorrow over the lake and at times Wednesday and Thursday will drop south and bring a few squalls along parts of Rt. 104.
The next areawide snow threat will arrive on Friday as a strong clipper system heads our way from Canada. This will not be a major storm but a couple inches likely. The major impact will be an arctic front and strong north wind that develops. This will allow frigid air to return into the weekend with temps in the single digits and wind chills well below zero. Local lake snows south of Lake Ontario will be in the forecast as well with accumulations likely with areas of blowing snow.
