The Arizona Diamondbacks have interest in free agent first baseman Carlos Santana, according to Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro.
However, Gambadoro said a deal is not close at the moment, and Arizona is still talking with other free agent first basemen.
The 16-year veteran will be 40 years old in April and hit .219 with 11 home runs and 54 RBIs across 124 games last season with the Cleveland Guardians and Chicago Cubs.
Gambadoro said the Diamondbacks love Santana’s clubhouse leadership and defense, and he could have a positive impact on second baseman Ketel Marte.

Arizona traded for eight-time All-Star Nolan Arenado in January to command one corner of the infield and has been searching for its answer at the opposite corner this offseason.
After the Arenado trade, Paul Goldschmidt was a name that came up for the Diamondbacks, and Gambadoro said Arizona is still talking to him. The 15-year veteran would bring many of the same qualities to first base as Santana.
However, Goldschmidt played the first eight years of his career with the Diamondbacks, and four years in St. Louis with Arenado, in addition to time on Team USA with the third baseman.
Pavin Smith would be Arizona’s current option at first baseman, but Goldschmidt or Santana would add veteran leadership to the position.
Santana was an All-Star in 2019 with the Guardians and a Gold Glove winner as recently as 2024 with the Minnesota Twins. He’s also a switch-hitter.
However, his offensive numbers dipped in 2025. After back-to-back seasons hitting about .240 with about a .750 OPS, Santana hit below .220 with a .633 OPS in 2025.
Goldschmidt, on the other hand, won the 2022 NL MVP and won a Gold Glove in 2021. The former Diamondback hit .274 with a .731 OPS in 2025.
