Jelly Roll Delivers Emotional Speech After Winning at the Grammys for the First Time

Before Sunday night, Jelly Roll had never won a Grammy. Now, he's a three-time winner.

During the 68th Grammy Awards on Feb. 1, the country star took home three awards, winning every category he was nominated in.

Two were awarded before the live broadcast began: Best Country Duo/Group Performance for "Amen" with Shaboozey and Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song for "Hard Fought Hallelujah" with Brandon Lake.

But the most memorable win took place during the live show. There, Jelly Roll was awarded the award for Best Contemporary Country Album for Beautifully Broken. This year marked the first time the country music album category was divided into Best Contemporary Country Album and Best Traditional Country Album.

In his inspiring acceptance speech, the singer reflected on his past struggles with substance abuse and incarceration, using the moment to remind fans that it’s never too late to change your life.

"I know they're going to try to kick me off here, so just let me try to get this out. First of all, Jesus, I hear you and I'm listening, Lord, I am listening, Lord," Jelly Roll began, before addressing his wife Bunnie XO. "Second of all, I want to thank my beautiful wife.
I would have never changed my life without you. I would've ended up dead or in jail. I would've killed myself if it wasn't for you and Jesus."

"It was a time in my life, y'all, that I was I was broken.
That's why I wrote this album," he continued after thanking his record label. "I didn't think I had a chance, y'all. There was days that I thought the darkest things, I was a horrible human.
There was a moment in my life, that all I had was a Bible this big and a radio the same size as a 6'8 foot cell, and I believe that those two things could change my life."

"I believe that music had the power to change my life, and God had the power to change my life," he concluded. "And I want to tell y'all right now, Jesus, is for everybody.
Jesus is not owned by one political party. Jesus is not owned by no music label. Jesus is Jesus, and anybody can have a relationship with him.
I love you, Lord."

While promoting “Hard Fought Hallelujah” earlier this year, Jelly Roll discussed his faith and what brought him to Christianity. Though he was baptized at 14, the singer became troubled in his teenage years and began experimenting with drugs.

Over the course of a decade, he was arrested multiple times for selling drugs and at one point was charged with armed robbery. After learning he had a daughter while incarcerated in 2008, Jelly Roll decided to turn his life around.

“I might wear it a little different than other people; I might say things that other Christians don’t think are right to say, but ultimately, I have a heart for God and I have a heart for Jesus.” he said during an interview with K-Love.

Lake added that Jelly Roll’s story of redemption is what made him the perfect collaborator for “Hard Fought Hallelujah”.

“I wanted to share this song with somebody that had a really beautiful and hard-fought story, and the first person that came to mind was Jelly,” Lake said.
