Men’s Recap

As Harvard, Yale, and Princeton were tied at the top of the standings with conference records of 5-0 coming into the meet, all the marbles were on the line at “HYP” in Harvard’s Blodgett Pool this weekend. Princeton came away with a pair of wins and will take home the Ivy League Dual Meet Champions crown for 2025-26.

(Note that the men score 2 more events at HYP than the women, which is why the total points add up to 353 rather than the traditional 300 for a dual meet.)

    Day 1

Princeton’s divers made a big statement to begin the meet, going 1-2-3-6-7 on the 1-meter board to give the swimmers a 16-point advantage over both Harvard and Yale before the first race had even begun. Three-time Ivy champion Aidan Wang got the win with 353.00 points, while first-years Chase Sorosky (347.10) and Luka Martinovic (337.75) placed 2nd and 3rd for the Tigers. Harvard’s Raphael Tourette (328.10) and Yale’s Nicholas Chau (310.50) were their team’s top performers.

Harvard countered with wins in the 200 free relay and 1000 free. The quartet of Sonny Wang (19.45), Marre Gattnar (19.41), Maro Miknic (19.22), and Evan Croley (19.50) touched the wall at 1:17.58, edging Princeton’s Logan Noguchi, Patrick Dinu, Yanning Zhang, and Jake Tarara (1:17.72). Yale, whose 1:17.43 from the Ohio State Invitational still leads the Ivy League, finished in 1:18.65.

Crimson first-year William Mulgrew broke the Blodgett Pool record in the 1000 free, winning handily in 8:48.72. Classmate Pablo Martinez gave Harvard a 1-2 sweep in the event, placing 2nd with 8:55.23. Yale’s Arshak Hambardzumyan was 3rd in 8:59.15. (Note: the Ivy League men still compete in the 1000 free at the conference championship meet.) At that point, Harvard led Princeton by 3 and Yale by 19.

Mitchell Schott of Princeton won the 200 free (1:33.38) with a 2-second advantage over teammate Arthur Balva (1:35.70) in heat 3, but Harvard’s Will Browne clocked a lifetime-best 1:35.35 in heat 1 to split up the Tigers and claim 2nd. Lars Kuljus of Yale was 4th with 1:35.71.

The Bulldogs flexed some muscle in the 100 back, going 1-3 with Jake Wang (46.85) and Ethan Guo (47.49) in what turned out to be the closest final of the day. Harvard’s Adriano Arioti touched second (47.23), while Tigers Parker Lenoce (47.53), Zhang (47.66), and Alex Townsend (47.70) came to the wall together in 4th, 5th, and 6th.

Yale kept up the momentum with a win in the 100 breast, as Charlie Egeland (53.02) touched out Harvard’s Joshua Chen (53.36) and Princeton’s Andrew Zou (53.62).

The Bulldogs, who had trailed both Harvard and Princeton by 24 after the 200 free, had now pulled within 12 points of each, while Princeton led Harvard by 1 at the conclusion of the breaststroke. Princeton pulled further ahead in the 200 fly, getting a 1-3 finish from Schott (1:42.20) and first-year John Rusnock (1:44.65). Harvard’s David Schmitt clocked a season-best 1:43.11 for 2nd.

In the 50 free, Harvard first-year Maro Miknic came within .01 of the pool record with his 19.33 victory. Yale’s Nicholas Finch, the defending Ivy League champion, edged Princeton’s Dinu, 19.37 to 19.39, for 2nd. Finch is the only swimmer in the Ivy League to have broken 19 seconds this season.

Yale first-year Kavin Li held off Princeton’s Rusnock to win the 400 IM in 3:49.11. Rusnock came home in 52.5 on the freestyle leg but couldn’t make up the 3.1-second lead that Li had built after the fly and back. Another Tiger, Devyn Caples, was 3rd (3:50.13), while Harvard’s Richard Poplawski, who had been in front of the field on the fly-to-back wall, finished 4th (3:51.81).

Harvard closed the night with a win in the 400 medley relay, with Arioti (46.65), Chen (53.08), Miknic (46.04), and Sonny Wang (42.38) combining for 3:08.15. Yale’s Jake Wang, Egeland, Finch, and Deny Nankov finished second with 3:09.12.

The teams retired for the evening with Princeton just 5 points ahead of Harvard and 18 in front of Yale, while Harvard led Yale by 30.

    Day 2

Princeton’s divers gave the Tigers a huge advantage once again, but this time, Martinovic won the 3-meter diving with a season-best 392.85 points. Wang scored 376 for 2nd, and Taso Callanan came in 4th with 348.55. Yale’s Chau scored 360.06 for 3rd, while Harvard’s Tourette finished 5th (332.10).

While the Tigers continued to extend their lead over their Ivy foes, things were about to heat up between Harvard and Yale for 2nd place. The swimming kicked off with a thrilling 200 medley relay that set the tone for the rest of the afternoon. Princeton’s “C relay” of Zhang (21.65), Keian Lam (24.49), Logan Noguchi (20.47), and Dinu (18.65) won heat 1 by a country mile, touching in in 1:25.26. Yale’s Kuljus, Alexander Hazlett, Finch, and Wang won the second heat with 1:25.46, just touching out Harvard’s Gattnar, Chen, Miknic, and Wang (1:25.63). Princeton’s “B” squad (Lenoce, Zou, Conor McKenna, and Townsend) came to the wall .02 behind Harvard, despite an 18.14 anchor from Townsend.

The first two events brought Yale within 12 points of Harvard.

Princeton’s Dinu set a new program and Blodgett Pool record in the 100 free, going 41.49 to win the event by a body length. Yale’s Wang went 43.18 to get 2nd. Harvard’s Browne touched 3rd (43.54), while Princeton’s Daniel Li and Yale’s Kuljus tied for 4th (44.01).

And now, Yale had pulled within 3 points of Harvard. But the Crimson bounced back with a win in the 200 back from Arioti (1:41.46) ahead of Princeton’s Schott (1:42.61) and Lenoce (1:43.40). Yale touched 4th and 5th with first-year Crash Ackerly (1:44.42) and Elliot Lee (1:45.88).

Harvard followed with the 200 breast, as Chen (1:56.16) got his revenge on Yale’s Egeland (1:56.33). Princeton’s Zou (1:56.64) was 3rd in the heat, while teammate Rusnock was 4th overall after having won the previous heat with 1:56.78.

Mulgrew made it 3 in a row for the Crimson with a 4:14.25 pool record in the 500 free. Yale’s Noah Millard went 4:18.15 for 2nd, and Princeton’s Balva eked out a 3rd-place finish over Yale’s Hambardzumyan, 4:19.58 to 4:19.69.

Yale’s Finch won a decisive victory in the 100 fly, coming to the wall in 45.39 ahead of Harvard’s Miknic (46.15) and Princeton’s Noguchi (46.81).

With only the 200 IM and the 400 relay left to swim, Princeton maintained a two-digit lead over Harvard and Yale, while Harvard was up 7 points on the Bulldogs.

Princeton’s Schott claimed the 200 IM title with 1:43.57, while Yale’s Wang (1:45.19) beat Harvard’s Arioti (1:45.98) for 2nd. Moreover, Yale’s Lee (1:47.02) edged Harvard’s Poplowski (1:47.31) for 6th place, evening the score between the two teams heading into the 400 free relay.

Princeton won the final event, with Noguchi (43.40), Schott (42.74), Tarara (43.77), and Dinu (41.14) combining for 2:51.05. Yale, who had been 2:50.70 at the Ohio State Invite, came in 3rd (2:52.81) in the relay, falling to Harvard in the team race by 9 points. Harvard’s time of 2:52.61 was a season best.
