Cyril and Rosalind's blossoming relationship has not been without its challenges in Call the Midwife. From being subjected to racist abuse in the street to Rosalind's parents trying – and failing – to hide their disapproval about the man their daughter had chosen, the fact that they are still going strong proves they are firmly committed to one another.

And that was once again cemented in tonight's episode (Sunday 1st January).

While enjoying a picnic together, Cyril had some exciting news: his divorce was on the verge of going through, meaning he would soon officially be a single man – and free to marry again, if he wished to.

"If you meet the right person," Rosalind said coyly, bowing her head, which he echoed with a smile. 

He then asked her if she would like to join him in York for a work conference, which they could turn into a long weekend – marking their first trip away together as a couple.

Naturally, Rosalind was thrilled, and not just because she was excited to spend some quality time with her partner, but also because she believed they were finally about to sleep together.

"I think it's finally going to happen!" she confided in Joyce.

But her enthusiasm was swiftly dampened when Cyril told her that he'd managed to book the last two rooms at the hotel they'd be staying at.

"Two rooms? Cyril!" she snapped. "It’s been more than a year and you're almost divorced and when you ask a woman – not a girl, an independent, modern woman – who loves you to go away for the weekend, and then you book two rooms, how do you think it's going to make her feel?!"

When Cyril said that he didn't want to "assume anything", she urged him to do exactly that.

"Assume. Assume! If you don't start assuming soon, I think I'm going to blow up," she exclaimed, before Cyril kissed her, as good as confirming they would only require one room after all.

"I think it's amazing," Natalie Quarry said of her character being so open and assertive about her sexual needs at the Radio Times Covers Party. "Especially with Rosalind coming into the show as quite a naive young character.

"We really get to see her grow up, and with the women's lib march and meeting, it’s really hit home for Rosalind about deciding the kind of woman that she wants to be and trying to see that to fruition in her life."

"That really comes into play with her relationship with Cyril," Quarry continued. "She's asking for what she needs, which I think is a really amazing thing. That's something that's very hard to do. I don't know if I'm that good at doing it, so it's amazing to play a character who is so strong and so sure of herself."

But Quarry went on to say that Rosalind still has "a lot of growing up" to do. "I am excited to see what people think of her development," she added.
