Susan Lucci Celebrates Beyond the Gates as a Win for Daytime TV

Daytime Emmy Winner Susan Lucci may not currently be appearing on a soap opera, with All My Children currently off the air, but that hasn’t stopped the fan-favorite actress from keeping a close eye on the genre she called home for more than 40 years.

While speaking with TV Insider about her upcoming memoir, La Lucci, the actress also addressed the possibility of an All My Children reboot by her former co-stars Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos, while reflecting upon her career and life.

During the conversation Lucci was asked about her thoughts on CBS’ newest soap opera Beyond the Gates. “I think it’s fabulous,” she said.

Lucci also reiterated her belief that ABC made a mistake by canceling All My Children, saying, “I think it was a mistake to let [All My Children] go off the air, to let the genre start to fade on the air because the audience loves the storytelling.”

Lucci praised CBS’ commitment to the genre, noting, “The stories are so relatable. I really applaud CBS for making a commitment to a brand-new soap.”

She also singled out executive producer Julie Hanan Carruthers, adding, “She was our executive producer for a long time. She was a wonderful producer. I really applaud her.”

Carruthers was executive producer for All My Children from October of 2003 until the series finale in September of 2011.

Lucci added that she has watched the series when she can, saying, “I try to catch episodes when I can, and I think it’s terrific storytelling, wonderful characters, and beautifully cast.”

She continued, “They are in their second season, and my congratulations to them and also to the audience.
