‘Abolish ICE, tributes to Chicago athletes among snowplow contest finalists

Chicago’s annual snowplow naming contest is entering its next phase, and one protest against federal immigration enforcement actions in the city has made the cut.

While there were numerous submitted snowplow names referenced ICE and other agencies, the phrase “Abolish ICE” was one of 25 finalists listed by the city in a press release Sunday announcing the voting phase of the contest.

According to a public records request made by Block Club Chicago, approximately 70% of the 13,000 submissions in the contest were for the “Abolish ICE” name, an idea that attracted the attention of residents and lawmakers, including Mayor Brandon Johnson, who endorsed the name as the contest moved along.

“This truck being named ‘Abolish ICE’ has my full and complete endorsement,” he said.

In addition to that entry entry, there were numerous references to Chicago luminaries, including Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, with a suggested plow name of “Caleb Chilliams.”

Chance the Rapper (Chance the Scraper), Daniel Burnham (Daniel Brrrnham) and Bulls legend Derrick Rose (Derrick Froze) also made the cut, as did Macaulay Culkin’s character in “Home Alone,” as “Kevin McPlowister” was one of the finalists.

Late-night host Stephen Colbert, who cut his teeth at the iconic Second City, is also the subject of a name, as “Stephen Coldbert” is on the list of finalists.

Here is the full list of 25 names. Those voting can choose up to six of the names before voting closes on February 14.
