First Alert Weather: More lake fluff and cold temps today; less harsh at times this week

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Welcome to February! Looking back on the past month, it seems like it lasted forever. That was mostly thanks to gray skies, early sunsets, plenty of snow, and bitterly cold temperatures. It followed an colder than average November and December as well. Needless to say this winter has been very… Wintry. Our February outlook is much of the same: Colder than average for the eastern U.S. and warmer than average to the west. Being a forecast for the entire month though, that is not set in stone and the cold pattern could break before then. And when it does, it should happen relatively quickly over the course of a few days. Expect some big temperature swings during that. But that break is not expected anytime soon.

We once again stay in the teens at best today, which would tie for second place in terms of longest stretches at or below 20 degrees over the past century.

We also have more fluffy Lake Ontario snow through the morning and into the afternoon. It should lighten up by around 3pm, but stray flakes are still possible through the evening. 1-3″ north of the Thruway, and locally higher totals along the immediate lakeshore.

Groundhog Day is looking ever so slightly less bitter and with more sunshine. Highs will be in the low 20s. Down in Punxsutawney Pennsylvania, it will be partly cloudy… Which means whether Phil will see his shadow or not will mostly be left up to luck. The First Alert Weather team is confident that no matter what Phil says, winter will continue until March 20th.

Lake effect snow will return Tuesday through Thursday. A clipper system will bring widespread snow Friday. The two warmest days of the week will be Tuesday and Friday with highs of 27 and 28 degrees respectfully… Both still below average. After the clipper system Friday, we get yet another bitterly cold arctic blast. Bundle up…

Stay tuned for updates on the forecast.
