Naveen Expresses Disappointment Over Union Budget 2026, Says Odisha Neglected

Bhubaneswar: Biju Janata Dal (BJD) President and Leader of Opposition in the Odisha Assembly, Naveen Patnaik has expressed strong disappointment over the Union Budget 2026 presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, alleging that it offers little for Odisha and its people.

In a statement, Naveen said the budget failed to provide any noteworthy benefits to the state. “I express my disappointment on the Budget 2026 presented today by the Union Government. The budget has offered no noteworthy benefits to #Odisha and its people”.

Highlighting public expectations, Naveen noted that people of Odisha had hoped the so-called “double engine government” would deliver growth through focused investments in infrastructure, job creation and enhanced central allocations.

“The anticipation from the people of Odisha was that the double engine government would offer a growth momentum with focus on infrastructure, job creation and additional allocation which is due to the state. The state has received very little”, he said.

The BJD President, however, welcomed the proposal to establish a Rare Earth Corridor in Odisha, acknowledging the state’s leadership in mineral production.

He said, “I welcome the proposal to establish the Rare Earth Corridor in Odisha. Odisha is the leading producer of several key minerals and will always contribute to nation building through its rich resources”.

At the same time, he expressed skepticism over the renewed announcement on National Waterways, calling it a decade-old proposal with no visible progress on the ground.

The BJD president also criticized the exclusion of Odisha from the proposed seven high-speed rail corridors announced as ‘growth connectors’ between major cities. He alleged that the earlier Bhubaneswar Metro project was “nipped in the bud” by the BJP and said the neglect of people’s needs continues.

Expressing concern over tourism development, he said it was “baffling” that the tourism-centric Scheme for Development of Buddhist Circuits had completely skipped Odisha, despite the state housing several important Buddhist heritage sites, including the famed Diamond Triangle.

Naveen further alleged that the Union Budget prioritizes extraction of Odisha’s natural resources without corresponding investments for the welfare of its people. He called upon the BJP-led state government to take responsibility and ensure Odisha receives its rightful dues from the Centre.

“It’s time the State BJP Govt takes responsibility for people of Odisha and ensure they get their rightful dues from centre. Odisha and its people deserve more and better from the Union Budget”, he added.
