First Alert Weather: Light lake snow to drop south through Saturday night; clearing Sunday afternoon

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Cold temperatures will persist through overnight Saturday with wind chills near -10 degrees in the Finger Lakes and hovering around 0 degrees for Rochester. These wind chills will briefly improve after midnight with increasingly overcast skies, before plummeting back down between 0 and -5 degrees for Rochester by Sunday morning. Persistent lake snow northwest of 104 will start to drop south through the evening before settling south of Rochester into the Finger Lakes by Sunday morning. Though northerly winds over Lake Ontario will bring these snow showers inland, we lose out on deep moisture in the lower atmosphere which will greatly limit snowfall accumulation. By Sunday morning, Rochester will see an inch at most. The addition of higher terrain will squeeze out some more snowfall bringing 1 to 2 inches by Sunday morning south of Rochester into the hills of the Finger Lakes. Winds will stay mainly out of the north Saturday night between 5 to 10 mph with occasional gusts between 15 and 20 mph.

Snow showers will taper off early Sunday afternoon. Skies will start to clear in the evening, but we will hang onto that cold through the day. Rochester will see a high around 16 degrees with wind chills topping out around 5 degrees in the afternoon. Winds will start to shift from the north to the northwest at 15 to 20 mph into Sunday evening. This northwesterly shift may bring a stray flake overnight, highlighting higher elevations south of Rochester. However, a dry atmosphere will make it very hard for any accumulating snow to make an appearance.

Monday will give us a much-needed break from lake effect snow and bitter cold. Rochester will likely be waking up to temperatures in the teens and perhaps a stray lake effect snow shower east, but wind chills will reach near 10 degrees by the afternoon with air temperatures reaching a high of 21 degrees. Any lingering flurries should clear out by morning and mostly sunny skies will dominate for the rest of the day.

Looking forward to the week ahead: Expect temperatures to stay in the 20s Monday through Thursday with nothing more than light lake flakes through most of the week. The next system to keep an eye on will enter Friday into Saturday. This will bring arctic air and wind spread snow showers back into western New York heading into the weekend.
