Hundreds rush to get Real ID at Chicago supercenter location before deadline

It was a busy morning at the Real ID supercenter in downtown Chicago Saturday as people rushed to beat a looming federal deadline.

The Illinois Secretary of State’s Office said they’re averaging about 150 people per hour at the supercenter location near Clark and Lake Streets as people scramble to get their Real ID-compliant cards before a February 1 deadline to do so.

A line formed throughout the day outside throughout the day.

“I think I’m a pretty good procrastinator,” said Ava Tomb. “I moved from Kentucky so I was like, well, ‘I need to get all my residency stuff put in so I still have my Kentucky ID too and I was like, well, I’m gonna have to travel.’”

Tomb and others brought all the necessary paperwork and said the process took less than an hour.

“My relatives are telling me you’re not going to make it to the airport if you don’t have your Real ID so here, we are ready for it,” said Selene Bivanco.

Come Sunday, TSA rules hold that residents will have to show your REAL ID with a golden star in the top right-hand corner to get through airport security, a policy that will be required for all U.S. domestic flights.

If you still don’t have your Real ID, TSA said you can present your passport and other acceptable identifications, including your state issued ID or DHS trusted traveler cards, like Global Entry.

“I actually have a passport, but my license was going to expire anyway this year, so I was waiting I didn’t realize today was going to be the last day until I heard it on the news,” said Cynthia Asoka.

TSA said if residents wish to travel domestically without their Real ID or the acceptable forms of identification, they’ll have to pay the $45 dollar fee so the TSA can verify their identity at the airport.

The Confirm ID process could take up to 30 minutes. It’s something many people traveling are trying to avoid while trying to catch a flight.

“Do it sooner rather than later because I have a trip in two weeks and I don’t know if I’m gonna be able to go,” said Anisha Kasem. “Unless I get my paper unless it comes in the mail.”

TSA will only accept permanent REAL ID cards at checkpoints. Those holding temporary paper IDs will still have to pay the fee for identity verification.
