Kentucky is 14-7 heading into Saturday night’s game against former head coach John Calipari and Arkansas.
Despite leading the Wildcats to four Final Fours from 2011 to 2015 – culminating in a national championship in 2012 — Calipari’s later tenure in Lexington frustrated Big Blue Nation. In his final four seasons with the program, Kentucky missed the NCAA Tournament in 2021 and didn’t get past the second round in its next three appearances.
After Calipari left for Arkansas, former Wildcats player Mark Pope was brought in and led the team to the Sweet Sixteen in his first season. While the Wildcats currently project to be a tournament team, though, simply getting there isn’t enough for their fans.
College GameDay talked about Kentucky’s season to date during Saturday’s episode at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, with Jay Bilas stating that the “biggest disappointment” for the Wildcats was their defense.
“They’ve had some injuries that have been really debilitating (and) that’s been a problem,” Bilas said, according to Kentucky Sports Radio. “Losing Kam Williams with a broken foot, Jaland Lowe is out for the season with his shoulder, Jayden Quaintance hasn’t been available, but I expected them to be an elite defensive team, and they’ve not been that.”
Seth Greenberg, though, encouraged Kentucky fans to take a deep breath, noting that “more good players are going across different schools.”
“I think there’s a bigger issue: Kentucky fans are absolutely unrealistic. They think they’re supposed to win every single game,” he said. “They have expectation. That’s great. But you know what? It’s harder to do what they did in the past because there are now more players in the game.”
According to Joe Lunardi’s updated bracketology on Friday, Kentucky is currently projected to be an 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament. That would match its lowest seeding in the Big Dance since 2014, when, incidentally, it lost to UConn in the national championship game.
