The Chicago Bulls really might be tanking their second of three games in four nights against the Miami Heat on Saturday.
K.C. Johnson of Chicago Sports Network notes that all three of Chicago’s two-way players were sighted at Saturday’s pre-game team shootaround, indicating that they may all be active in lieu of several other bodies.
Beyond recent injury report mainstays Zach Collins (right first toe sprain) and Tre Jones (left hamstring strain), the Bulls could also be without Josh Giddey (left hamstring strain), Jalen Smith (right calf tightness), Coby White (right calf strain), and Nikola Vucevic (rest). Could Lachlan Olbrich and Yuki Kawamura get 20 minutes of action tonight? Will we see 40 minutes of Patrick Williams against a solid Heat club? Time will tell.
Russell Lansford-Imagn Images Bulls team president Arturas Karnisovas has been fairly inscrutable leading up to this year’s Feb. 5 trade deadline. With Chicago on the cusp of its fourth straight defeat on Saturday night, Karnisovas is apparently confused as to whether or not he’s fielding a contender and should build to win this season (spoiler alert: he should not). But to Karnisovas’ credit, he has the Bulls in position to be a big spender this summer. As Danny Leroux of The Athletic writes, Chicago may have as much as $68 million in cap space to sign free agents this summer, thanks to its seven expiring contracts (eight if you include Julian Phillips’ team option, which functions as a de facto expiring deal). The Cleveland Cavaliers opened up the 2025-26 season as serious title contenders in the Eastern Conference. Now, having been beset by star injuries and chemistry issues, the Cavs occupy just the No. 5 seed in the conference with a 29-21 record. Then again, beyond the 35-12 Detroit Pistons, everyone in the East is bunched together. The No. 2-seeded New York Knicks (30-18) are just two games ahead of Cleveland by record. Now, the Cavaliers are seeking reinforcements. Per Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com, Cleveland might be interested in trading for beloved Bulls reserve guard Ayo Dosunmu as it looks to bolster its bench. Dosunmu this season feels like what Cleveland was hoping to get out of Lonzo Ball, as a sharpshooting guard who can defend. Speaking of Lonzo Ball, ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel reports that Cleveland is looking to move off the injury-prone former Bull, who has lost his shooting stroke. Bulls guard Coby White could be a great trade fit for the Houston Rockets, writes Forbes’ Evan Sidery. Chicago appears unwilling to extend its most prolific scorer — currently on an expiring $12.9 million contract — beyond this season. Sidery suggests that, beyond matching contracts, the Rockets could flip one of their many future firsts in an exchange. During a must-listen Karnisovas smackdown on 670 The Score, SB Nation’s Ricky O’Donnell made some intriguing deadline trade proposals for Chicago.“You’ve got to trade Ayo Dosunmu. The guy is shooting 46 percent from 3 this year, he’s having the best season of his career. He’s probably in line to double his salary in free agency. I would expect him to get mid-level exception money, maybe $15 million a year, four for $60 million,” O’Donnell posited. “So I’d be looking to trade Ayo. The team I’m looking at is potentially the Portland Trail Blazers. They owe the Bulls a lottery-protected draft pick. I would be trying to lower the protections on that pick… The Bulls never sell high on anyone, this is a big opportunity for them to sell high on Ayo.”
O’Donnell went on to advocate for flipping White to the Rockets, too. He’s relatively pessimistic that Karnisovas will do anything at the deadline, given that that’s been his default move. O’Donnell would be happy to see Chicago flip further pieces, too, so long as the club received major draft equity back in return. During a new episode of The Ringer’s “The Bill Simmons Podcast,” guest Zach Lowe suggested (albeit mostly in jest) that, among GM gigs, he would love a shot at salvaging the once-proud Bulls. Simmons votes for taking on such a role only with the Seattle SuperSonics if they were to return via expansion.“Someone has to save the Bulls,” Lowe proposed. “If ownership would ever just get out of the way, whoever saves the Bulls is like a hero. You revive one of the brand-name franchises in all of sports… so that one I would consider.”
Former Bulls Coach of the Year Tom Thibodeau has been enjoying his 2025-26 season as a man without a team. The 68-year-old was a featured guest on the night of Derrick Rose’s jersey retirement on Jan. 24, and subsequently took in Chicago’s eventual 129-118 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers two nights later. More recently, he was on hand for another former Bulls star, Jimmy Butler, as he launched a coffee brand. — Steph Noh (@StephNoh) January 30, 2026 In non-Bulls news, former nine-time All-Star Philadelphia 76ers forward Paul George has been suspended 25 games for violating the league’s anti-drug policy, per ESPN’s Shams Charania. George claimed the medication in question was designed to treat ongoing mental health challenges. “Over the past few years, I’ve discussed the importance of mental health, and in the course of recently seeking treatment for an issue of my own, I made the mistake of taking an improper medication,” George said.MORE BULLS FROM BLEACHER NATION: Go Ad Free | Subscribe to the BN Newsletter
