At a time when Hollywood was already struggling to find humor and joy, the death of Catherine O'Hara on Jan. 30 felt all the more devastating. Josh Gad, who performed with O'Hara in Film Independent's live read of Dr. Strangelove in 2016, is among those shocked by her sudden death.
View this post on Instagram"I don’t understand what I’m seeing," Gad wrote in an emotional Instagram post. "I can’t bring myself to believe she is gone. Why is the world such a heart breaking place right now? I truly cannot process how to say goodbye to someone so full of life who seemed to just be hitting her prime. Goodbye legend. Thank you for making us laugh until we hurt… which is why right now we are all hurting so damned much knowing we will never again get those laughs. RIP. My love and deepest condolences go out to her entire family."
Along with Gad and O'Hara, the Dr. Strangelove event featured a diverse cast of performers, including Sir Patrick Stewart, Colin Hanks, Seth Rogen, Shia LaBeouf, Johnny Knoxville, Fiona Apple, Fred Willard, Olivia Wilde, and P.J. Byrne. O'Hara played President Merkin Muffley. Her delivery of the hilarious line, “Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here. This is the war room!” had Rogen, seated next to her, in stitches.
While Gad and O'Hara didn't act in any other projects together, O'Hara appeared on his YouTube series, Reunited Apart, in a John Hughes Tribute. She recreated the iconic Home Alone 2 scene in which she yells "Kevin!" before fainting.
The beloved actress, who starred in Home Alone, Beetlejuice, and Schitt's Creek, seemed to be at the height of her career. Even at 71, she seemed unstoppable.
Most recently, she's been seen in commercials with her longtime pal, Eugene Levy, as a therapist in The Last of Us, and in her award-winning performance as Patty Leigh in The Studio. Rogen, the co-creator and star of The Studio, posted a sincere tribute to his friend and co-star.
"Getting to work with her was a true honour," Rogen wrote on Instagram. "She was hysterical, kind, intuitive, generous … she made me want to make our show good enough to be worthy of her presence in it."
"We're all lucky we got to live in a world with her in it," he added.
