SAN FRANCISCO – Warriors coach Steve Kerr apologized for spreading what he called “misinformation” during a recent press conference in Minneapolis.
“Being in Minneapolis for those four days was incredibly emotional and powerful, and it was difficult time for all of us,” Kerr said during his pregame press conference on Friday. “At the end of those four days, a pretty emotional time, I misspoke, and so I apologize for the misinformation.”
While in the city that has seen a surge of immigration enforcement and resulting protests, the Warriors had one of their two games postponed after immigration personnel shot and killed Alex Pretti.
When given a microphone after losing to the Wolves on Monday, Kerr blasted Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents for their actions in Minneapolis, which included taking 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos into custody.
“It’s not like we’re rooting out violent criminals,” Kerr said. “They’re taking 5-year-old kindergartners and U.S. citizens and detaining people. Immigration is a problem that needs to be addressed, but it needs to be addressed by Congress, legislatively, not by a military force in the streets pulling people from their homes.”
During Friday’s pregame media availability before playing the Pistons, Kerr clarified his statements.
“I definitely misspoke, and I knew that ICE was arresting some criminals, and I immediately regretted it, because I knew that to be the case,” Kerr said.
However, he did not regret criticizing the organization for its treatment of citizens and children.
“But my point is that they’re also arresting people and detaining citizens and people who should not be detained, and that the manner in which they’re doing it, as you see, is riling everybody up all over the country,” Kerr said.
Kerr has been a vocal critic of president Donald Trump’s administration during both of his terms. Just this season, Kerr has attended a No Kings rally, called for gun control laws multiple times and has blasted immigration enforcement personnel for the death of Minnesota woman Renee Nicole Good.
At the end of his apology, Kerr made sure to add, ”So I hope everybody else out there who is saying stuff that’s not true, please apologize also.”
