The wing of an American Airlines plane made contact with a de-icing truck at O’Hare Airport, prompting a flight to be delayed for several hours as the aircraft was taken out of service.
Passengers on American Airlines flight 2121 from Chicago to Boston, set to depart at 1:20 p.m. Friday, had their travel plans set back by a few hours when the wingtip of their aircraft “made contact” with a deicing truck.
The plane had just finished the de-icing process when the contact was made, American Airlines said. No injuries were reported.
“The aircraft was taken out of service to be inspected by our maintenance team and the flight will depart shortly on a replacement aircraft,” a spokesperson for American Airlines told NBC Chicago. “Safety is our top priority and we apologize to our customers for their experience.”
An NBC Chicago viewer on the plane reported they were stuck on the tarmac for over 2 hours.
The flight was ultimately rescheduled to take off at 5:30 p.m.
The collision occurred around the same time a ground stop was put in place at O’Hare due to heavy snowfall and icy conditions, which could also have contributed to the delayed takeoff. The ground stop was lifted around 3:30 p.m.
