SGA Senate proposes Judicial Board updates, block seating change

The SGA Senate approved changes to the SGA Judicial Board, adjusted how one student organization is evaluated in block seating, and passed several student-focused acts and resolutions on Thursday.

C-01-26, authored by Katherine Steel, a senator for the Barefield College of Arts and Sciences, proposed an amendment to the SGA Constitution to formally define the Judicial Board’s authority, jurisdiction and selection process.

The legislation says the board has been operating outside the constitution “due to necessity” while continuing to develop.

The Senate also approved B-01-26, also authored by Steel, updating the Code of Laws to match the proposed constitutional changes. The bill spells out duties and procedures for the board, including attendance expectations and a demerit-point discipline system.

According to the SGA constitution, amendments must be ratified by the student body in the SGA spring general election, which is set to take place Feb. 24, or in Homecoming elections.

The Senate heard bill B-02-26, authored by Sens. Tristin Lollar and Brady McCormick of the School of Law, which revises the block seating assignment process for the Student Bar Association. The bill will be sent to the Rules Committee for review.

The SBA appealed its fall 2025 block seating placement in August 2025. The appeal was denied days later, with Chief Justice Catherine Martin writing that the organization faced “unique challenges in the block seating application process.” Martin said addressing those challenges required legislation and recommended that the Senate investigate the point allocation process for block seating applications.

“We’ve been working throughout the semester on legislation to address some of the problems we’ve heard from our constituents specifically as applied to the SBA,” Lollar said.

Senators approved A-01-26, authored by Krista Miller, a senator for the College of Communication and Information Sciences, which will establish  a Career Center tabling event in February in a high-traffic spot such as the Student Center Lobby.

The act says the Career Center will provide pamphlets and materials, and SGA members will staff the table.

A-02-26, authored by Charlie Key, a senator for the College of Communication and Information Sciences, creates an engagement and academic survey for the College of Communication and Information Sciences, with a promotion push tied to the college’s Share the Love event, which will be held Feb. 9-13.

The legislation includes a tabling plan that uses Senate budget funds to purchase nine dozen Krispy Kreme donuts, totaling $148.40, to encourage participation.

The Senate also adopted several resolutions, including one recognizing February as HPV and HPV-related cancer awareness month and one commemorating the 30th anniversary of the UA softball program. Resolutions to encourage the use of an American Sign Language interpreter at the annual SGA presidential debate and creating a designated recycling bin for campaign buttons after election week were also adopted.

The recycling bin, according to the resolution, would be placed outside the SGA office from Feb. 25 to March 4.
