Jeffrey Epstein sent £10,000 to Peter Mandelson’s husband, new files reveal

Jeffrey Epstein sent £10,000 to Lord Mandelson’s husband, Reinaldo Avila da Silva, a new tranche of millions of documents related to the deceased sex offender released today revealed.

An email among the files posted on the Justice Department website purported to show Epstein agreeing to fund medical treatment for Avila da Silva in 2009. “I will wire your loan amount immediated,” the message from his account stated.

A few days later, da Silva emailed Epstein saying “thank you for the money which arrived in my account this morning”.

Last year, when asked by the Financial Times for comment on why he had accepted money from Epstein, da Silva did not reply, the newspaper reported.

Mandelson, then business secretary, married da Silva in 2023. The political grandee was sacked as Sir Keir Starmer’s US Ambassador last September over his former friendship with Epstein.

Mandelson has declined to apologise for his relationship with the notorious paedophile, and denied any knowledge of his crimes.

The Justice Department released more than three million new documents on Friday, the latest in a series of disclosures following pressure from survivor groups on the White House to make its files on Epstein public.

The department denied that any effort had been made to protect Donald Trump, a former friend of Epstein.

The new dataset, posted on the department’s website, include records withheld during previous releases under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which passed last year following sustained political pressure.

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said 500 lawyers worked on vetting the files, with identifying information of victims and images of women redacted, except Epstein accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell.

The batch includes 180,000 images and 2,000 videos, he said, describing some of the material as commercial pornography.

Blance told reporters that he shared the frustration of victims who feel the process of releasing information has been too slow.

“The victims of Epstein have gone through unspeakable pain,” he said, adding that he hoped to “bring closure” to victims.

Blanche added that the Justice Department had not sought to protect Donald Trump as part of the release process. The president was a former friend of the disgraced financier. There is no suggestion of any wrongdoing by Trump.
