Minnesota Twins Separating From Baseball President Derek Falvey on the Eve of Spring Training

This is an absolute stunner; less for the content of the decision and more for the timing.

The chief baseball officer in Minnesota is out, after almost the entire offseason played out, and on the eve of Spring Training:

Suffice to say, this is NOT a normal time for a top baseball executive to be moving on from an organization. I actually can’t remember the last time it happened in January or February, and, even if I could, I’m guessing it would’ve been because of some unusual, specific, and/or non-baseball reasons.

Maybe that’s the case here, but it’s also possible this was just the culmination of a bizarre offseason of inaction, which followed a failed sale of the team, which included some more minority investment and a massive sell-off at the Trade Deadline. Sure sounds like it was just a baseball decision at a completely absurd time:

I mean, if the Twins were going to turn over their baseball operations, the absolute LAST time you’d want to do it would be AFTER the offseason. You’ve missed out on all the best available options to build it out, you’re going to have to sprint to figure out your scouting/drafting plans, you’ve now just built a 2026+ roster with the guy who is no longer in charge, you just HIRED A NEW MANAGER, and the landscape is in relative tumult anyway thanks to a lost TV deal, a still-uncertain ownership situation, and an upcoming CBA fight. WOOF.

If I had to guess, the Twins will now just let those in place shepherd the thing for 2026, and re-evaluate everything again after the likely-coming lockout (up to and including another potential run at a sale). I hope Twins fans are prepared for another rocky year or three.

As for Falvey, he was part of the loaded Cleveland front office back in the 2010s, at one point sharing duties with Mets President David Stearns, and working with current Cubs GM Carter Hawkins. He became the top baseball man for the Twins after the 2016 World Series, and worked closely with his GM Thad Levine, who departed last year. Now Falvey, too, is out, and we’ll see what’s next for him. I have to believe he could slide into a new front office as a special assistant relatively smoothly if that’s what he wanted to do for the 2026 season, and then re-assess after that. I suppose we’ll see what else comes out about the circumstances of this bizarrely-timed separation, but it sounds like it was just a delayed decision.
