Minor Trades Around Baseball, Cubs 40-Man, Early Extensions, and Other Cubs Bullets

The kids wound up getting the entire week off of school because of the massive dump of snow combined with the sub-zero temps. A little bonus winter break for them.

We have reached the part of the offseason where the edge-of-40-man-roster moves have started happening. I’m talking about trades, specifically, and the same kinds of ones we see at the a rostering deadline in the fall. Things are getting crowded on the 40-man, teams are contemplating who has options left and who doesn’t, waivers are picking up (which winds up causing additional 40-man moves, including even more waivers), clubs have a better sense now of which areas of depth to target, etc. So we’re seeing a lot of little trades around baseball where an edge-case 40-man guy is getting sent from one org to another, often for a lower-level, non-premium prospect. I believe there have been four or five around baseball already this week, and I’d expect some more ahead of the start of Spring Training. There was a time when I would’ve projected the Cubs to get in on this action, trying to snag someone they like off of another team’s over-crowded 40-man, given the extreme volume of open 40-man spots the Cubs had early in the offseason (remember that?). Now, not only is the Cubs’ 40-man full, but they’ve also added SO MANY guys who would fall into the type of category/caliber of player I’m talking about for these smaller deals. They loaded up on big league deals in the bullpen, and they’ve loaded up on really compelling minor league reclamation signings, too. The Cubs have also added multiple guys of this type via waivers (Ryan Rolison, Justin Dean, Ben Cowles), and also some minor league signings on the positional side, too (Dylan Carlson and Chas McCormick). None of that is to say the Cubs couldn’t or wouldn’t still pounce if there was a 40-man guy who was close to being squeezed out somewhere else and they’d had him on their radar for a long time – the Cubs have a lot of guys on their own 40-man they could try to sneak through waivers – but I’m just saying it looks less like it’ll specifically be a plan. When you have 7 open 40-man spots in late-January, there’s a lot you probably NEED to do to bring in edge talent, including these types of targeted minor trades. But if you have a full 40-man and have gone deep on minor league deals, too? It’s less of a necessity, and more of something you’d only do if the absolute right opportunity came along. Also to keep in mind on all of this: the Cubs may well wind up on the other side of these kinds of moves, too. They will have to open up 40-man spots if and when they sign another pitcher or outfielder, if and when they add Carlson or McCormick, if and when they add a reclamation reliever, or simply if and when they make another waiver claim. It just looks so efficient:

    — Jacob Zanolla (@jacobzanolla) January 30, 2026 In some ways, it was baked into his role to have these opportunities, but it’s still pretty cool that Justin Turner had multiple walk-offs for the Cubs in 2025:

    — Mitch Santini (@mitch_santini) January 30, 2026 I knew it was a disappointing year for Kristian Campbell relative to his meteoric rise for the Red Sox after the 2023 draft, but I didn’t realize just how bad 2025 was after the scorching start and the eight-year, $60 million contract signed almost immediately after his debut (which, again, came after just one full year in the minors). Now the Red Sox have this guy on a big deal, not knowing if he can actually hit in the big leagues, knowing definitively that he cannot play big league caliber defense on the infield, and not having a spot for him even as a 4th outfielder. They’re probably just going to have to option him and let the year play out to see what happens, and there’s plenty of time for him to still take some development steps. But his story so far is definitely a great example of why, from a player perspective, sometimes it is very smart to sign that early extension.
