Lavrov: Assad Trial “Settled Long Ago”, Russia’s Partners Know the Details

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the issue of trying Syria’s ousted president Bashar al-Assad was “settled long ago,” adding that Russia’s “partners” are “fully aware of the circumstances” of Assad’s arrival in Russia.

In an interview with the Turkish newspaper Turkiye and Turkey’s TGRT television channel, published on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s official website, Thursday, 29 January, Lavrov responded to a question about demands to put the ousted Syrian president on trial, saying, “This issue was settled long ago.”

He added that Russia’s “partners are fully aware of how everything happened,” and how Bashar al-Assad and his family ended up in Russia in December 2024.

Lavrov noted that Assad was “indeed threatened with death,” and said Russia granted him asylum “purely for humanitarian reasons,” and “he took advantage of it.”

He continued, “If you follow our domestic affairs, Bashar al-Assad does not interfere in Syrian affairs.”

Russian officials have previously said on several occasions that Russia accepted Bashar al-Assad’s asylum on humanitarian grounds.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov did not comment on Assad’s future in remarks delivered ahead of Syrian transitional President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s arrival in Moscow yesterday to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In the same interview, Lavrov said Russia and Turkey had “long planned” operations to integrate Syrian Kurds into the country’s political life, adding that these operations have now begun to be implemented.

The Russian minister said that “the operations Russia planned long ago with Turkey have begun to take shape in contemporary Syria,” explaining that he meant Kurdish participation in political life, political and security structures, and the Syrian army.

    al-Sharaa in Moscow

Lavrov’s remarks came one day after Syrian transitional President Ahmed al-Sharaa visited Russia.

During his meeting with Putin, al-Sharaa said Russia has a historic role in Syria’s unity and stability, and in the stability of the region as a whole, noting that the two countries had raised the level of economic cooperation.

He expressed hope that Russian efforts would continue so that the Middle East could move toward greater stability and development.

He said Syria has taken many steps over the past year and overcome several stages and obstacles, most recently the challenge of unifying Syrian territory.

He also said the return of areas east of the Euphrates to Syrian government control is an important step that will contribute to Syria’s territorial unity.

Putin, for his part, said Russia is monitoring al-Sharaa’s efforts to restore Syria’s territorial unity, describing the process as gaining “momentum.”

“Since al-Sharaa’s last visit to Moscow, various committees have been working across different fields to develop relations between the two countries,” Putin said.

He considered that relations between Russia and Syria are developing “thanks to al-Sharaa’s efforts.”

Putin said much has been achieved in developing Russia-Syria relations, as the two sides succeeded in moving economic cooperation from a “dead” point toward tangible progress, stressing the need to maintain this trend.

He added that Russian construction sector staff are ready to work jointly on Syria’s reconstruction.

Statements released after the meeting did not indicate that the two leaders discussed handing Bashar al-Assad over to Syria.
