Mobile prices surge across Egypt’s local market

The Mobile Phone Dealers Division at the Giza Chamber of Commerce has disclosed a new wave of price increases enacted by the majority of domestic smartphone manufacturers, with hikes ranging between 5 percent and 15 percent.

In a press statement issued Thursday, Mohamed Hedaya al-Haddad, Board Member of the Giza Chamber of Commerce and Head of the Mobile Division, noted that these increases come despite severe market stagnation currently gripping Egypt’s mobile sector.

Major brands operating local assembly plants have already adjusted their price lists; notably, Oppo raised prices on three models by 12 percent to 18 percent, while Honor increased tablet prices by 15 percent to 20 percent. Retailers have reportedly received notifications from other manufacturers regarding further price adjustments in the coming days.

Al-Haddad pointed out that the pricing strategies implemented by these manufacturers are developed independently of distributors and retailers. He further criticized the use of “superficial” incentive schemes that fail to benefit either the merchant or the end consumer. This occurs despite the substantial subsidies and incentives provided by the government to these companies as part of the national strategy to deepen local manufacturing and localization.

Al-Haddad characterized the policies of domestic mobile manufacturers as a clear exploitation of current market crises and the recent decision to rescind the customs exemption previously granted to Egyptians expats.

A government source, speaking to Al-Masry Al-Youm, maintained a firm stance, stating: “The situation is under full control. We have bet on domestic production to foster and encourage competitiveness, and we are prepared with various scenarios and measures to address any developments as they arise.” The source further alleged, “Certain merchants are driven by self-interest; they seek to manipulate market sentiment and influence policy decisions in favor of resuming imports.”

In contrast, Khaled Negm, the former Minister of Communications, urged the government to review the recent decision and conduct a thorough study of its economic impact. He emphasized the need to weigh customs revenue against the benefits of exemptions. Negm asserted that if domestic production costs are indeed rising despite government support, it suggests that protectionist measures are being applied to manufacturers who fail to provide a competitive advantage to the consumer.

Meanwhile, the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) is reportedly in negotiations with companies to facilitate the payment of customs duties on mobile devices brought from abroad by passengers. The proposal involves offering low-interest installment plans to ease the transition following the cancellation of the exceptional customs exemption.
