After being seriously considered for the Las Vegas Raiders head coaching job, Denver Broncos quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Davis Webb has withdrawn his name from consideration for the gig.
Denver Broncos QB coach Davis Webb withdraws from Raiders HC job
The Las Vegas Raiders had a strong interest in Broncos quarterback coach Davis Webb, who has made an incredible transition from being a player to a coach. Webb’s attention to detail, building of scouting reports, and knowledge of the quarterback position and offense made him an exciting candidate in Las Vegas, who is heavily favored to draft Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the first overall pick.
An offensive-minded head coach, a potential new young quarterback, that was the recipe. Webb, however, withdrew his name from consideration for the Raiders job, as first reported by Ian Rapoport.
RapSheet also mentioned that Webb is considered the prime candidate for Denver’s vacant offensive coordinator gig after Sean Payton fired Joe Lombardi.
The Broncos did interview Buffalo Bills quarterback coach Ronald Curry for their OC vacancy today. Curry was part of Payton’s staff when he was with the New Orleans Saints years ago, and he interviewed for Payton’s staff when he took the Broncos’ job in 2023.
All signs point to Webb being promoted to offensive coordinator, but a handful of teams, including the Baltimore Ravens, have submitted formal requests to interview Webb for their offensive coordinator job. Denver will have competition for his services, but keeping the Webb-Bo Nix connection going seems like the best move for the franchise.
The biggest question that looms if Webb stays is whether or not Payton does, in fact, relinquish playcalling to him. It was reported by Rapoport a few days ago that Payton had talked to Joe Brady about being the OC in Denver, and there was a possibility of him calling plays.
Ultimately, Brady signed a five-year contract to be the next head coach of the Buffalo Bills.
We’ll see how things unfold as the Broncos will have to fill three coaching vacancies on Payton’s current staff.
