Street blocked as crews fight blaze that partially collapsed suburban building

A fire in suburban Joliet prompted the closure of a street as crews battled a fiery blaze that led to a partial collapse of a commercial building on Thursday afternoon.

Around 2:19 p.m., authorities responded to a report of a structure fire with possible people trapped at 1 South Eastern Avenue in Joliet.

Crews with the Joliet Fire Department found heavy smoke coming from a single-story brick commercial building. All of the people in the building had managed to get out.

The building on fire houses a commercial printing company called Union Signs and Printing.

Firefighters initiated a defensive attack after the fire broke through the roof, fully engulfing the structure and causing a partial collapse, authorities said.

Eastern Avenue just south of Route 30 was blocked by emergency crews as they fought the fire.

A photo provided by the Joliet Fire Department shows large flames burst through the roof of the building.

The fire was still burning as of 4:30 p.m., the fire department said.

Aerial footage from NBC Chicago Sky 5 showed five fire trucks with hoses on the fire around 4:30 p.m.
