Kpop Demon Hunters Breakout EJAE Teases New Music and K-pop Future (Exclusive)

EJAE, the breakout star of the surprise Netflix hit film, Kpop Demon Hunters, sat down with Parade to talk about her burgeoning music career as a singer and what's next for her as a songwriter and beyond.

While the 34-year-old Oscar nominee is enjoying a super successful awards season so far, she also has a lot on the horizon, starting with the release of her new single in February.

EJAE shared a little about the new song, teasing an unexpected track: "'Time After Time' is the title. What should I say…Be open-minded. I think that's the only teaser I can give."

The song drops on Feb. 6, following the release of her first single, "In Another World," which came out in October 2025. She shared a teaser for the song on Instagram on Jan. 27.

Along with her work on Netflix's Oscar-nominated animated film, EJAE is a successful songwriter, with most of her past work in K-pop. A few of the songs she co-wrote are "Psycho" for Red Velvet, "Armageddon" for Aespa, and, more recently, "So Cynical (Badum)" for LE SSERAFIM.

Luckily for fans of her work, she intends to continue working on K-pop music, with EJAE saying, "I'm planning on writing for anyone, and anywhere. That's like the goal."

She also noted that a couple of songs she worked on are coming out soon, adding, "So stay tuned."

As for whether or not she'd be open to working on movie soundtracks again, or even original scores, EJAE enthusiastically said, "Absolutely, 100 percent."

"I think music in general, if there's just music there, I will do it...I'm willing to do all. You know, wear all outfits," she stated.

Going from a songwriter behind the scenes to getting awards on a big stage, EJAE shared what it felt like getting the very first win, saying, "Oh my god, I think I blacked out. I think it was just so overwhelming."

"I felt the sensation just like, from the top of my head and throughout to the tip of my feet...and it felt so weird. It felt kind of like I was underwater for a long time and I finally came out breathing," she went on. "Feeling acknowledged for that hard work feels great and very refreshing, because I really never felt that before."

Before becoming a songwriter, EJAE trained for years to be a K-pop idol but was cut before she could debut. Now, she's won accolades at all the major Korean awards shows, such as the MAMA Awards.

When asked if these felt different than other awards shows, EJAE said, "Oh yeah. I feel so honored to even be nominated for that, but to be given the award, [it] truly means a lot. Because I love K-pop, and as a lot of people know, I trained to be a K-pop idol."

"It means a lot to me and the little version of me when I was 11," she concluded.

The Overwhelming Public Support Made EJAE Emotional

A major part of K-pop Demon Hunters' success was the music, and in particular, the song "Golden," which EJAE co-wrote and sang. After the movie was released, many K-pop idols (and other fans) performed their own covers of the song, trying their best to emulate EJAE's strong and unique voice.

After asking her what it felt like to have her voice celebrated in K-pop after her struggles in the past, she said, "Oh, it made me cry."

"I was at this panel the other day, and I was talking about that. And literally in the crowd while I was saying it, it was like, ‘We love your voice, EJAE!' And that just like, immediately, I couldn't not cry," she went on. "It's just so foreign to me to hear that, really. I think for so long, I heard kind of the opposite, or just like, no comment on my voice."

"So to be hearing that now, it's just such a confidence booster. I'm trying to rewire my brain," EJAE said.

Next up for EJAE, the Grammy Awards are on Sunday, Feb. 1, while her new single, "Time After Time," finally arrives on Feb. 6.

EJAE could potentially go home from the Grammys with multiple awards, as "Golden" is nominated for Song of the Year, Best Song Written For Visual Media, and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance (as HUNTR/X with Audrey Nuna and REI AMI), while the Kpop Demon Hunters soundtrack is nominated for Best Compilation Soundtrack For Visual Media. "Golden (David Guetta REM/X)" is also nominated for Best Remixed Recording.

"Golden" received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song as well, while Kpop Demon Hunters is nominated for Best Animated Film.
