We look ahead to Saturday’s Premier League game at Anfield with our Liverpool vs Newcastle prediction and preview. Can Arne Slot’s side build on their big midweek win?
Liverpool vs Newcastle: The Key Stats
The Opta supercomputer is backing Liverpool to get their first Premier League win of the calendar year, as they triumphed in 52.4% of the 10,000 pre-match simulations. The Reds have not lost any of their last 18 Premier League games against Newcastle United (W13 D5). Only Nottingham Forest and Wolves (both 7) have failed to score in more Premier League away games than Newcastle this season (6).Liverpool and Newcastle United face off at Anfield in a match that could have big implications in the race for the UEFA Champions League places.
The Reds slipped down to sixth in the Premier League table after a last-gasp 3-2 loss to Bournemouth last weekend, with Manchester United and Chelsea taking advantage of their dropped points.
Newcastle, meanwhile, are just three points and three places behind their hosts despite failing to win their last two league matches, but Arne Slot won’t want that gap to close any further.
It has been a largely frustrating start to 2026 for Liverpool, having drawn all four of their top-flight outings before the loss at Bournemouth.
Their current five-game winless streak in the league (D4 L1) is their longest in a single season since November and January 2002-03 (11 under Gérard Houllier).
Indeed, Liverpool could fail to win each of their opening six league fixtures of a calendar year for the first time since 1954 (first 10), a year in which they were relegated.
But the Reds certainly aren’t lacking for quality, as they proved in the Champions League by securing third place in the league-phase table with a thumping 6-0 win over Qarabag on Wednesday.
In his 91st game in charge in all competitions, Slot enjoyed his biggest winning margin as Liverpool head coach, while it was the club’s biggest win overall since March 2023 when they thumped rivals Man Utd 7-0 in the Premier League.
But the question is, can the Dutchman get his squad firing on all cylinders back in domestic competition?
Liverpool’s Premier League Problems
Premier LeagueFive Wins in 18 Premier League Games: Liverpool Have Been Struggling for Almost Half a Season
1 day ago David SegarMohamed Salah, who netted against Qarabag, has more Premier League goal involvements against Newcastle than against any other side (19 – 10 goals, 9 assists). An assist in this match will see him become the first player in the competition’s history to record double figures for both goals and assists against an opponent.
Dominik Szoboszlai, who assisted Salah’s goal in midweek, can be a threat from anywhere. No player in the top flight this term has had more shots from outside the box than him (33).
Eddie Howe’s side come into this game on the back of a morale-boosting result of their own, though, having come from behind to earn a 1-1 draw with holders Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, though results elsewhere meant the Magpies had to settle for a play-off place.
But Howe knows the importance of getting his side back on track in the Premier League, especially with those extra two play-off games being added to their already hectic schedule.
They have failed to score in either of their last two league games; their 2-0 home loss to Aston Villa last weekend followed a 0-0 draw away at Wolves.
Only Nottingham Forest and Wolves (both 7) have failed to score in more Premier League away games than Newcastle this season (6). In fact, 70% of their away goals this term (7/10) have come in their two wins on the road (4-1 vs Everton, 3-1 vs Burnley).
Newcastle generated 2.3 xG in that loss to Villa despite not hitting the back of the net – it’s their highest xG tally without scoring in a Premier League game since September 2022 (2.8 xG vs Crystal Palace).
And Howe will hope that top scorer Bruno Guimarães is fit enough to start. Not only does he offer an important threat in front of goal, he has also made more defensive line-breaking passes than any other player in the Premier League this season (35), with six of those leading to a goal. The Brazilian came off missed the game with Villa due to injury but was an unused sub in Paris.
Liverpool, meanwhile, have another injury to contend with after Jeremie Frimpong was subbed early on Wednesday with what appeared to be a groin issue. He joins Conor Bradley, Giovanni Leoni and former Newcastle striker Alexander Isak on the injury list.
Ibrahima Konaté may be available again after being given compassionate leave, while Joe Gomez reportedly could be available again after coming off in the loss at Bournemouth with a knee knock. Curtis Jones missed the Qarabag win through illness, but will hope to have recovered in time for Saturday.
Liverpool vs Newcastle Head-to-Head
Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 18 Premier League games against Newcastle (W13 D5), a run that dates back to a 2-0 away loss in December 2015.
And, having won the reverse fixture 3-2 back in August, Liverpool are looking to complete the Premier League double over Newcastle for the 12th time – it would be the most they’ve done so against a specific opponent in the competition (currently joint with West Ham).
Newcastle, meanwhile, have failed to win any of their last 29 Premier League away games against Liverpool (D5 L24), their joint-longest winless run against an opponent in their league history (also 29 at Man Utd between 1973 and 2012).
It was quite a game in the reverse fixture, with Liverpool taking a 2-0 lead against 10-man Newcastle, who had Anthony Gordon sent off in the first half. The hosts were somehow able to bring it back to 2-2 late on, only for substitute and then 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha to win it deep into stoppage-time.
Liverpool vs Newcastle Prediction
While Liverpool have struggled to pick up all three points in the Premier League since the turn of the year, that is expected to change here.
The Opta supercomputer gives them a 52.4% chance of a victory at Anfield, with Newcastle’s hopes sitting at just 23.3%.
A draw is only slightly more likely at 24.3% – which would be Liverpool’s fifth of the year already.
