Stephen Colbert Reveals the Surprising Dream Guest Hed Like to Have on The Late Show Before Final Episode

Like every major television host from Johnny Carson to Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert has a few dream guests he'd love to have on The Late Show.

With the countdown ticking on his long-running CBS late night series, however, the 61-year-old comedian revealed the one celebrity he's hoping to invite on The Late Show before the series' official conclusion.

Appearing on a recent episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers, Colbert openly discussed the imminent end of The Late Show on CBS, confirming that the series' final episode will air on May 21, 2026.

With the end of the show on the horizon, Late Night host Seth Meyers asked Colbert whether he had any "dream guests" he was trying to invite on the show before the series' wrap in May.

"Yeah, the Pope," Colbert immediately answered. "[The] American Pope!"

As Colbert indicated, Pope Leo XIV is the first American-born pope to lead the Catholic Church upon the start of his papacy on May 8, 2025. Born in Chicago, Illinois and raised in nearby Dolton, he is only the second pope to hail from the Americas following his predecessor, the Argentinian Pope Francis.

As a lifelong practicing Catholic, Colbert remains incredibly active in the church, openly discussing his spiritual beliefs in his various stand-up routines and publicized media appearances.

On that same episode of Late Night, Colbert went on to detail a trip he made to Rome to meet with Pope Francis, alongside several other noteworthy comedians, including fellow talk show Jimmy Fallon.

Speaking about the experience, Colbert humorously mentioned that Meyers was invited to attend the trip, only to bluntly turn the opportunity down.

As Colbert remembered, "I invited you, and you said –"

"'No way,'" Meyers quoted himself as saying. "I did your show the night you had to leave. You literally left the Ed Sullivan Theater to get on a plane to go meet the Pope."

"I literally had to get on a helicopter to make it to JFK in time to go to Rome to meet the Pope," Colbert recalled.
