Old Friend Reese McGuire Winds Up with the Brewers, Which Comes With an Extra Layer of Dislike

The Chicago Cubs, having brought back Christian Bethancourt as a third/veteran/depth catcher on a minor league deal, were probably not going to be a realistic return spot for Reese McGuire. Sure, they added two of those types last offseason (McGuire and Carlos Perez), but McGuire has since shown he can still be a quality big league back-up, and Moises Ballesteros has since emerged as a relative lock for the big league roster (where he might occasionally serve, himself, as the emergency third catcher).

Anyway, that is to say I wasn’t going to be bummed whenever McGuire signed elsewhere. I was just going to be happy the Cubs had him available in a pinch last year, and appreciate that he was great for them, relative to what you expect from a third catcher.

But it turns out, I am bummed by his signing elsewhere. Because of where he is signing, specifically:

I don’t love this. It’s a move at the very outermost margins of a roster, so it probably doesn’t matter that much, but still. I don’t love it.

Why? Well, setting aside the fact that McGuire is probably one of the best third catcher possibilities out there and the Brewers get him on a minor league deal, it’s the fact that he just spent a season in the Cubs organization. Working very closely with their pitchers. With their coaching staff. With their pitching infrastructure. It won’t be his primary value to the Brewers, but you better believe they will be pumping him for as much info about Cubs players and processes as he can give them.

You think McGuire doesn’t have some extra insights to offer on Cade Horton? On Daniel Palencia? On Miguel Amaya? On Tommy Hottovy? So on and so forth. It’s very recent stuff, too, and the absolute last place you’d want even the tiniest extra competitive edge landing is in Milwaukee.

In other words, even if Reese McGuire never catches a big league inning for the Brewers in 2026, he may STILL provide their organization some value simply by virtue of knowing a few intimate things about how the Cubs’ pitching infrastructure operates. Heck, a huge part of that system is having a group of catchers in place who work so closely together with the pitchers and the coaches and the staff to optimize run-prevention. So I’m sure the Cubs brought McGuire deeply into the fold on just about every layer of what they do.

But, hey, the Cubs hired literally Craig Counsell away from the Brewers and it’s not like they magically started dominating the Brewers, so I’m sure there are ways to counteract these things …
