A quiet, dry day is in store for the Chicago area Thursday, but things will start to change overnight as lake effect snow begins to build in western Michigan, leading to a “prolonged” period of snow for northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana Friday and Saturday.
The snow, the National Weather Service warned, could lead to poor visibility and hazardous travel at times Friday morning, particularly in areas along the lakefront, including Lake and Cook Counties in Illinois and Newton and Jasper Counties in Indiana.
As the system approaches, here’s a breakdown of what to expect and when.
Thursday
Thursday remains dry and cold, the NBC 5 Storm Team said, with a high of 17 degrees. Early Thursday morning, readings were in the single digits, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman said.
Overnight, temperatures will drop down to five degrees, bumping back up to a high of 19 by Friday, Roman said. Temperatures will continue to increase slightly over the next few days, with a gradual warming trend back into the 20s and eventually 30s by next week.
Friday
About midnight, lake effect snow will begin to build in western Michigan, Roman said, including in Berrien County. By about 8 a.m., that plume of snow would begin to push into northwest Indiana and northeastern Illinois, with snow continuing through the late-morning hours.
Snow along the lakefront could continue through about lunchtime, the NWS said, with “light, fluffy” snow falling within a one or two-hour period.
“Lake effect snow may continue or redevelop near the lake during the afternoon,” the NWS said in a post on X.
Despite the snowfall, conditions could remain “largely dry” across much of northeastern Illinois, with one or two inches possible as the plume bobs back-and-forth.
In northwest Indiana however, heavier snowfall was expected, Roman said. There, a winter storm watch for Porter and Lake Counties will go into effect beginning at 3 p.m.
“Travel could be very difficult,” the NWS said, with the main window for the heaviest snowfall expected Friday evening through Saturday morning.
“The hazardous conditions could impact the Friday evening commute,” the NWS added.
Saturday
Lake effect snow is likely to continue through Saturday afternoon and early evening, Roman said, as the snow band continues to wobble between northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana.
In northwest Indiana, the winter storm watch for Porter and Lake Counties will remain in effect until 6 p.m.
How much snow could fall?
Parts of Illinois, especially along the lake, could see between one and two inches, Roman said.
In northwest Indiana however, snow will “pile up,” Roman said, with as much as three to four inches possible.
In Lake and Porter Counties, those totals could reach up to six inches, Roman added.
