The Tuscaloosa City Council indefinitely tabled a $5.57 million grant in tax incentives for the Delaney Property Group of Mobile on Tuesday. The grant would have allowed for a commercial development on 5.61 acres in Springbrook, a neighborhood in Tuscaloosa.
On Jan. 6, John Jackson, development manager of the Delaney Property Group, told the council’s Finance Committee that in order to begin construction, the site must be taken down to raw dirt.
Susie Smith, a resident of Springbrook since 1989, said taking the site to raw dirt “will require the demolition of 20 rental properties and the felling and removal of around 200 trees.”
Smith said that most of these estates and trees have been on the site since before Springbrook emerged in 1945.
Current residents said the development isn’t necessary.
“I want to be clear that the city has a role in promoting development in Tuscaloosa when the project provides for the greater good of citizens,” said Joan Barth, a Springbrook resident. “I failed to see how this Delaney Group’s plans add much value to Tuscaloosa to fill a significant gap in the community.”
When the development plan was first announced in a City Council meeting in 2017, citizens were informed that the project would benefit Springbrook residents.
The development was proposed nearly nine years ago, but has been unable to attract any other commercial investors into the property.
“I’ve been to these meetings for over 30 years,” said Sandy Wilson, a Springbrook resident since 1992. “I picture two or three businesses being built, and the rest of it will be the raw dirt, the noise, the construction.”
Wilson said she fears for her community that the development plan will fall short of the needs in Springbrook.
