Golf fans and world-wide television viewers will observe the end of an era this week at Torrey Pines. After 16 years, Farmers Insurance is ending its sponsorship, thus a new name next year will bring global attention to San Diego.
Along with the top stars in professional golf the tournament does more than anything to showcase our beautiful La Jolla coast.
The real attraction is spectacular Torrey Pines with two brilliant courses and the always breath-taking Pacific Ocean backdrop. Over four days, thousands will flock in person, and millions more will watch on CBS, ESPN and The Golf Channel.
This year’s tournament includes San Diego native son Xander Schauffele, ranked 6th in the world, and another San Diego State alum, J.J. Spaun, who won the prestigious U.S. Open last year. They will start on the championship South Course, shortly after 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning, joined in a star group by Harris English, who won at Torrey last year.
After a practice round late Wednesday afternoon English told reporters, “I’ll do anything as a PGA Tour member — a past champion — to help find a sponsor to help keep this tournament here at Torrey Pines because you have a lot of guys that feel the same way I do that love this place. Such an iconic place here at Torrey.”
Twenty-eight of the world’s top golfers are set to play, as the Farmers returns to the traditional Thursday-to-Sunday format for the first time in five years after avoiding going head-to-head with pro-football championship play.
The winner’s prize money is an eye-popping $1.7 million from a total purse of $9.6 million. The great Tiger Woods, who set course record-low scores and won at Torrey eight times, is still an occasional competitor, while now also heading up a committee helping sort out future tour scheduling.
This is the 73rd year for a PGA Tour event in San Diego and the 59th time at Torrey Pines.
Happy with the always worldwide glow, Marty Gorsich, CEO of the local sponsor Century Club, said, “Our beautiful show, broadcast all over the globe at a time when most elsewhere the weather is very rough, makes people want to come out here to enjoy San Diego.”
Longtime journalist Barry Jagoda is author of Journeys With Jimmy Carter and Other Adventures in Media. Jagoda covered all eight of Tiger Woods’ professional wins at Torrey Pines.
