The controversy began in December 2025, when Tarantino, 62, appeared on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast and singled out Dano as the “weakest” part of There Will Be Blood. While discussing the 2007 film, the director dismissed Dano as “just such a weak, weak, uninteresting guy,” later escalating the remark by calling him “the weakest male actor in SAG” and “the limpest dick in the world?”
Support for Dano extended well beyond Sundance. George Clooneyweighed in during AARP’s Movies for Grownups ceremony earlier this month, defending Dano, Owen Wilson, and Matthew Lillard—three actors Tarantino said he did “not care for.”
“By the way, Paul Dano and Owen Wilson and Matthew Lillard, I would be honored to work with those actors. Honored,” Clooney said. “We are living in a time of cruelty. We don’t need to be adding to it.”
Lillard also addressed the moment with humor. “It was crazy. I keep showing it to my wife to convince her that I am worthy, that people still like me,” he told Entertainment Weekly the same day as Dano spoke up. “I am a piece of ass!”
