Paul Dano Breaks Silence After Quentin Tarantino Calls Him the ‘Weakest Actor in SAG’

Paul Dano is finally addressingQuentin Tarantino’s harsh comments after weeks of industry-wide chatter.

Speaking to Variety at the Sundance Film Festival on Wednesday, January 28, Dano reacted with gratitude to his supporters. “That was really nice,” the 41-year-old said of the support he received. “I was also incredibly grateful that the world spoke up for me so I didn’t have to.”

Dano was joined at Sundance by Little Miss Sunshine co-star Toni Collette, who didn’t hold back when asked about Tarantino’s remarks. “F**k that guy!” Collette, 53, said. “He must’ve been high… It was just confusing. Who does that?”

Directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris also defended their longtime collaborator. Dayton called Tarantino’s comments an “embarrassment,” adding, “I can only think that his rawness of his performance made Tarantino uncomfortable,” of Dano’s performance. Faris echoed the sentiment.

The controversy began in December 2025, when Tarantino, 62, appeared on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast and singled out Dano as the “weakest” part of There Will Be Blood. While discussing the 2007 film, the director dismissed Dano as “just such a weak, weak, uninteresting guy,” later escalating the remark by calling him “the weakest male actor in SAG” and “the limpest dick in the world?”

Support for Dano extended well beyond Sundance. George Clooneyweighed in during AARP’s Movies for Grownups ceremony earlier this month, defending Dano, Owen Wilson, and Matthew Lillard—three actors Tarantino said he did “not care for.”

“By the way, Paul Dano and Owen Wilson and Matthew Lillard, I would be honored to work with those actors. Honored,” Clooney said. “We are living in a time of cruelty. We don’t need to be adding to it.”

Lillard also addressed the moment with humor. “It was crazy. I keep showing it to my wife to convince her that I am worthy, that people still like me,” he told Entertainment Weekly the same day as Dano spoke up. “I am a piece of ass!”

Despite Tarantino’s remarks, Dano’s career continues to speak for itself—from The Batman and The Fabelmans to a BAFTA nomination for There Will Be Blood itself.
