Could Giannis Antetokounmpo land on the Chicago Bulls this season, after all? A new Wednesday report from Shams Charania of ESPN suggests that, while the two-time MVP hasn’t outright demanded a trade, the 10-time All-Star Milwaukee Bucks power forward is “ready for a new home” as soon as this season’s Feb. 5 trade deadline.
Sources inform Charania that the Bucks are finally amenable to moving off Antetokounmpo. The injured 31-year-old big man finds himself trapped in an absolutely hopeless situation. Despite being in an Eastern Conference so winnable that the 23-23 Bulls could be an actual playoff team, the Bucks are just 18-27 on the season, and now occupy the No. 12 seed in the conference. Antetokounmpo will be sidelined for at least the next four-to-six weeks with a right calf strain — and possibly longer, per The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel’s Jim Owczarski.
The Bulls possess five tradeable first-round picks, making them a potential sleeper in an Antetokounmpo bid. During a recent episode of ESPN’s “Brian Windhorst and The Hoop Collective” podcast, insiders Windhorst, Tim Bontemps and Tim MacMahon all project that Chicago could get into the bidding.
As expert capologist Yossi Gozlan notes, several big-ticket teams that could have an interest in Antetokounmpo will have significantly more draft equity over the summer. Antetokounmpo has yet to officially demand a trade, so one wonders if this latest not-quite-news item from Charania materially changes Milwaukee’s plan for its franchise star this season. The Knicks have no movable future first-round picks at present, but can flip two over the summer. Miami has two firsts now, and will have four during the offseason.
The Los Angeles Lakers can flip either their 2031 or 2032 first, and also have swap rights for five years. But they’ll be able to move three picks this summer.
