Bulls Exploring a Trade for Spurs Forward Jeremy Sochan (Report)

With a little more than a week remaining until this season’s Feb. 5 NBA trade deadline, rumors are swirling about how the Chicago Bulls intend to handle their seven expiring contracts — eight if you count Julian Phillips’ team option for 2026-27, which seems unlikely to be picked up. And the Bulls’ intentions before the trade deadline are suddenly mixed.

Weeks ago, word on the street was that Chicago president Arturas Karnisovas was finally going to sell his veterans this year. However, earlier this week, the exact opposite was reported. So… who knows?

Enter a little-used forward in San Antonio.

Spurs power forward Jeremy Sochan feels like a potentially nice buy-low fit. And now, apparently, the Bulls think so, too.

    Jeremy Sochan On The Move?

Marc Stein of The Stein Line reports that Sochan, the ninth overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, is hoping a change of environment will revive his sagging career.

Sochan has fallen to the fringes of head coach Mitch Johnson’s rotation — he’s essentially only a mop-up minutes guy or an injury sub. The 6-foot-8 Baylor product has seen his minutes slashed from 25.3 to 13.1 this season, and accordingly is averaging career lows of 4.2 points (on .480/.257/.688 shooting splits), 2.7 boards, and 1.0 dimes per.

Per Evan Sidery of Forbes, the Bulls number among the clubs that have inquired about Sochan — along with the Charlotte Hornets, New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix Suns. Sidery asserts that both San Antonio and Sochan’s management team are hoping to find a trade fit in time for next week.

The former 2023 All-Rookie Teamer, who’s still just 22, is a career 28.7 percent shooter on 2.3 triple tries a night. Sochan is currently on an expiring $7.1 million deal, and will hit restricted free agency — if he’s tendered a qualifying offer.

Sochan’s Bulls Fit, Acquisition Cost Questions

If this is a scenario in which the Bulls can bring a recent lottery pick for, say, a second-round pick, that wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. But a player-for-player feels like a tough scenario. San Antonio also has an influx of guards, so a Tre Jones or Ayo Dosunmu deal (which would, in theory, allow the Bulls to probably net draft capital) doesn’t make a ton of sense.

I will note, however, that San Antonio is intimately familiar with Jones’ game; they threw him into a three-team trade with the Bulls at last year’s deadline as part of the Zach LaVine-to-Sacramento deal.

Sochan’s fit in Chicago is an open question, as well.

What’s the difference between Jeremy Sochan and, say, Patrick Williams? Sochan has a size profile more befitting an actual power forward, and is more forceful when it comes to scoring inside. But, unlike Williams, he’s an inconsistent floor spacer from beyond the 3-point arc — which makes him a lineup liability in a modern NBA offense.

Adding a young, promising, former lottery pick for minimal draft equity isn’t a terrible option. The Bulls clearly have a talent deficit in their frontcourt and a glut of guards. So balancing the roster by acquiring a piece with potential long-term upside would be permissible. But…

But… Should the Bulls Add Jeremy Sochan?

To be clear: the play here should be selling.

This 23-23 Bulls club appears destined for, at best, a four-game first-round playoff sweep and, at worst, the No. 10 seed in the Eastern Conference and yet another play-in tournament exit.

No one — NO ONE — on this roster is a clear blue-chipper. Longest-tenured Bull Coby White will be pursuing a massive raise from his $12.9 million expiring salary this summer, seems to be the name that keeps coming up as a potential trade chip. Dosunmu, Jones, and Nikola Vucevic are the other key expiring contracts who could hold value across the league and have been mentioned frequently in rumors and reports.

Second-year forward Matas Buzelis, 21, and $100 million point guard Josh Giddey, 23, could be building blocks. Both have all-star upside. But there’s zero guarantee that either of them will be the type of perpetual All-NBA talent that can propel the franchise to deep playoff runs.

At the end of the day, the goal should be winning championships and not selling tickets to another year’s play-in tournament games. So getting as many shots as possible at young talent through the draft is ideal.
