WEBSTER, N.Y. — Street maintenance crews and local contractors have been busy clearing snow and ice from streets, sidewalks, and parking lots following a recent snowstorm.
Tony Zucco, a local contractor, said his salt supply is very low and he is using it at an astronomical rate. He secured his salt supply at the end of summer, which was unusual for him, but the consistent snow and low temperatures this winter have depleted it faster than expected.
“With, you know, a little snow every night. Lake effect because obviously being closer to the lake where we are, we go through a lot of salt. We salt every night, every other night. You’re getting small bursts, and you just, you go through salt. It’s the only thing that makes a parking lot safe,” Zucco said.
Zucco treats shopping centers, apartment complexes, medical offices, childcare centers, and other areas.
He says his local salt supply is dwindling, so he is working to conserve and use it more carefully. He is on pace to use more than 2,000 tons of salt this year, compared to the 1,500 to 2,000 tons he used in previous years. When temperatures drop low enough, Zucco switches to a product that can melt ice at lower temperatures.
“When you put salt down in these temperatures, what it does is it helps to break up the, the snow that’s been compacted from driving on it,” said Zucco. “And what that does is over time again as you get the sun, the temperatures warm up. Then it turns into slush. Scrape all that off, get you back to asphalt. And then you salt that.”
